WE’RE all feeling the pinch this winter and are trying to save money where we can.
From keeping the heating off to making sure appliances are switched off to save on funds.
And now, the US Department of Energy has revealed their top hacks to cut your energy bills by up to 30%.
They revealed on their blog that kitchen appliances are the most likely to guzzle up energy and drive up your bills.
The department wrote: “Your kitchen contains a host of energy-using appliances and there are ways to reduce their energy use.
“First, buy the most efficient units possible. This includes refrigerators, dishwashers, and stoves. (There isn’t much difference in microwave oven efficiency.)
“Identifying the most efficient models is simple: just look for the EnergyStar label. This assures you that it’s among the top efficient models.”
However, if you can’t afford new appliances they have some genius hacks to help you save money.
For your fridge, they recommend not setting it to freezing cold temperatures.
They recommend temperatures of 35°-38°F for the fresh food compartment and 0°F for separate freezers for long-term storage.
Regular defrosting of your manual-defrost freezers and refrigerators can also save you money in the long run.
Frost build-up decreases the energy efficiency of the unit, so don’t allow frost to build up more than one-quarter of an inch.
The energy pros also suggest a savvy hack to ensure your refrigerator doors are sealed tight.
You can test this out in a matter of seconds by using a dollar bill.
Close the door with a piece of paper or a dollar bill so it is half in and half out of the refrigerator.
If you can pull the paper or bill out easily, the latch may need adjustment, the seal may need replacing, or you may consider buying a new unit.
Other simple tricks include using small electric pans, toaster ovens, or convection ovens for small meals rather than your large stove or oven.
A toaster or convection oven uses one-third to one-half as much energy as a full-sized oven.
4 ways to keep your energy bills low
Laura Court-Jones, Small Business Editor at Bionic shared her tips.
1. Turn your heating down by one degree
You probably won’t even notice this tiny temperature difference, but what you will notice is a saving on your energy bills as a result. Just taking your thermostat down a notch is a quick way to start saving fast. This one small action only takes seconds to carry out and could potentially slash your heating bills by £171.70.
2. Switch appliances and lights off
It sounds simple, but fully turning off appliances and lights not in use can reduce your energy bills, especially in winter. Turning off lights and appliances when not in use can save you up to £20 a year on your energy bills.
3. Install a smart meter
Smart meters are a great way to keep control over your energy use, largely because they allow you to see where and when your gas and electricity is being used.
4. Consider switching energy supplier
No matter how happy you are with your current energy supplier, they may not be providing you with the best deals, especially if you’ve let a fixed-rate contract expire without arranging a new one. If you haven’t browsed any alternative tariffs lately, then you may not be aware that there are better options out there.
