February 5, 2025 (PORT SUDAN) – An opposition faction in South Sudan, led by Simon Gatwech Dual, signed a peace agreement with President Salva Kiir’s government in Port Sudan on Sunday, under the auspices of the Sudanese General Intelligence Service. The signing followed consultations held in the Sudanese city. The agreement focuses on implementing security arrangements, integrating the opposition faction’s forces into the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF), and ensuring the faction’s participation in government. Sudan’s intelligence chief, Ahmed Ibrahim Mufaddal, said the agreement was reached after two rounds of consultations overseen by the intelligence service, with close attention from the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. He emphasized that the agreement would pave the way for security and stability in the border regions, particularly the Al-Nuer region, given the faction’s influence there.
