BROOKFIELD — Township residents will have a new way to stay connected, thanks to a new program.
Trustee Daniel Suttles introduced the My Brookfield app to residents at a regular meeting on Monday.
The app, available for free on Google Play and the App Store, directly links users to the township’s departments, similar to what their website already does. It also provides FirstEnergy power outage alerts, links to the township’s school district and library and notifications for future government meetings, school closings and weather advisories via the National Weather Service.
Suttles explained to residents that the app has been a topic for the last several months, and said it would cost the township $4,200 a year. Two of the years will be paid with American Rescue Plan funds.
“They’re (trustees Mark Ferrara and Shannon Devitz) both in, but I was the one that proposed this. I want it to work, we all want it to work,” Suttles said. “But I’m going to push it everywhere we go, because at the end of two years, if we have 16 people — which we already have more than — signed up, it’s not doing what we want it to do and we’re not obligated anymore.”
Suttles said he has already put notifications out on the app for things such as weather advisories and department hirings. But if residents don’t download it, they mean nothing.
“We need to get this to as many people as possible,” Suttles said.
Suttles said trustees plan to send informational postcards to residents and will push for them to download it on the township’s websites and social media pages.
