Today, we were saddened to learn of the passing of Bears owner and team matriarch Virgina McCaskey. For more details, please read our initial report on the news.
The battle for Super Bowl supremacy will be won in the trenches — and Philadelphia Eagles pass rusher Josh Sweat figures to be in the middle of the action.
Chicago Bears fans — who are understandably obsessed with the idea of their favorite team upgrading on both sides of the line of scrimmage — should keep an eye on Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Josh Sweat. Sweat is coming off a regular season in which he collected 8 sacks, 15 quarterback hits, and 9 tackles-for-loss in 16 games. Perhaps with that in mind, Pro Football Focus sees Sweat as a fit for the Bears and someone the team should pursue this offseason.
This is what PFF’s Bradley Locker had to say about Josh Sweat being a potential Bears free agency target:
For the second straight year, the Bears have a surplus of spending value — $80 million, to be exact — so why not chase a big fish like Sweat? The current Eagle has been terrific over the past four years, ranking 24th in PFF pass-rushing grade (80.7) and 22nd in wins above replacement. Sweat would pair with Montez Sweat (49 pressures, 14.7% pass-rush win rate) for a top-tier duo (with the same last name as a fun wrinkle).
All things being equal, I am not opposed to adding an impact pass rusher to this defense. In fact, I would encourage the Bears to make a splash at the position. And if it happens to be Josh Sweat, then so be it. But before we go any further, let’s take a quick dive into a player who could be a fit for Chicago’s football team this offseason.

Considering the Bears’ need to upgrade along the defensive line this offseason, free-agent-to-be Josh Sweat is a player who I’ll watch with great interest during Sunday’s game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs. And what better place to boost your free agency stock than with a stellar performance against the two-time defending Super Bowl champions? If Sweat can produce some sacks, pressures, hurries, quarterback hits, tackles for loss, and defensive stops on Sunday, it could help Philly win a Super Bowl *AND* solidify his status as a top free-agent defensive end on the market.

Josh Sweat figures to get PAIIIIID this offseason. He turns 28 in March and has averaged 7 sacks, 17 QB Hits, and 9 TFLs over the last five seasons. Who wouldn’t want to add that to their favorite team’s defensive line rotation? I do not imagine the Bears as the only NFL team that envisions Sweat as a possible fit. With Sweat on the brink of cashing in, news of a change in representation is worth sharing as ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the talented pass rusher has hired NFL super-agent Drew Rosenhaus:
With the Super Bowl on Sunday, and free agency looming next month, Eagles DE Josh Sweat changed agents today and hired Drew Rosenhaus and Ryan Matha. “He clearly is one of the very top free agents,” Rosenhaus said. Sweat led the Eagles this season with eight sacks pic.twitter.com/QJswzQoVSm
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) February 3, 2025The main hangup I have with a potential offseason pursuit of Josh Sweat is that he might not make it to free agency.
Sweat should be a top priority for the Eagles. And while their cap space pales in comparison to what the Bears have at their disposal, Philadelphia is the type of team that is willing (and often, able) to move mountains to make key cogs in the system back. There is a belief that the Eagles are inclined to bring Sweat back on a new deal to pair with Nolan Smith Jr. after watching Bryce Huff struggle in Year 1 with the team. If that is how the cookie crumbles, then one of the premier offseason targets at an important position will be off the board.
But if Josh Sweat *DOES* make it onto the market, this is what Pro Football Focus projects his next contract to look like: 3 years, $18 million average salary, $32.5 million in guarantees, and a total contract value of $54 million. Sweat is PFF’s 10th highest-graded player who is eligible to become a free agent. Only Khalil Mack ranks higher among edge defenders. In other words, Sweat is in good company and is in a position to cash in with a big-money deal. At this point, it is only a matter of which team gives it to him.
