A trio of California reps reintroduced a bipartisan bill Wednesday that could speed up the nuclear fuel removal process at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station at Camp Pendleton.
Democratic Rep. Mike Levin, along with Republican Reps. Darrell Issa and Young Kim, reintroduced the Spent Fuel Prioritization Act to encourage the removal of spent nuclear fuel from decommissioned nuclear sites in areas with large populations, high seismic hazard, and national security risks.
“As I’m beginning my fourth term in Congress, I’m continuing my focus on advancing bipartisan legislation that will expedite the removal of spent nuclear fuel from San Onofre,” said Levin in a statement.
“San Onofre should be at the top of the Department of Energy’s list for spent nuclear fuel removal, and this bipartisan legislation implements criteria to help achieve that.”
More than nine million people live within 50 miles of the San Onofre station, which would make its fuel removal process a top priority, the legislators said.
“We cannot allow spent nuclear fuel to harm innocent lives,” Kim said.
The bill does not favor a site for a permanent storage nor a consolidated interim storage facility, and it does not authorize the transfer of spent fuel to any non-consenting state or locality.
“Our Southern California communities deserve the peace of mind that comes from knowing that spent fuel is no longer stored at the facility,” Issa said.
Contractors began dismantling the San Onofre plant five years ago in a project estimated to take 8-10 years to complete.
The act was first introduced by Levin in 2019 during his first congressional term. Since then, Levin has secured over $148 million in funding for the management of spent nuclear fuel.
Levin currently sits on the Energy and Water Development subcommittee as a new member of the House Appropriations Committee.
