Obsessive Alex Bregman Watch: Still Holding Out for Maximum-Length Deal?

It has felt for a few days like maybe there was a thaw coming in the Alex Bregman/Scott Boras demands for a maximum-length deal in order to finally put pen to paper in free agency, but maybe that was just a vibes check that was based on nothing at all.

Because, according to Bob Nightengale, nothing has changed:

Free agent third baseman Alex Bregman still has no interest in a short-term contract and seeks a 6- or 7-year deal.

Although we don’t know exactly where the other involved parties are willing to go at the moment, there were reports earlier this offseason that the Astros had offered six years and $156 million, and were sticking firm at that number. But with the Astros now talking about Bregman in the past tense, it’s not clear if that offer is still on the table.

The Cubs and Red Sox are likely aiming to stay strictly short-term (with opt-outs) in their offers, and then you have the Tigers and Blue Jays – who may not be Bregman’s preferred landing spots – as possible six+ year offers out there? It’s just not certain that there is a level of interest out there for Bregman that will get him the kind of deal he and Scott Boras are apparently holding out for (at least not at an annual value that comes anywhere close to $30 million).

It feels a bit like Kris Bryant’s free agency a few years ago, with the market pretty correctly surmising the longer-term risks, and Boras (correctly in that case) waiting for just one team to do something foolish. Will that happen this time around? Can’t say for sure, but I know that it won’t be the Cubs jumping up to offer Bregman seven years.

    So we keep on waiting.
