Sounds Like Nikola Vucevic is An Option For the Warriors Even After Jimmy Butler Trade

Buckle up and hold onto your hats! It’s deadline day, everybody!

We have about five hours remaining until the NBA trade deadline at 2:00 PM central time. The biggest moves have likely come and gone with Jimmy Butler, Zach LaVine, De’Aaron Fox, Brandon Ingram, Luka Doncic, and Anthony Davis all having been dealt. However, the Chicago Bulls still have Nikola Vucevic and a few more pieces to potentially ship off, and there will almost certainly be several smaller deals that go down over the remaining hours.

Shipping off Vooch is the ideal scenario for Chicago before the deadline. The two teams that have been linked most to the 34-year-old center have been the Golden State Warriors and the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers made a move for a center last night acquiring Mark Williams from Charlotte, so we can probably cross them off the list.

The Warriors made the big splash of picking up Jimmy Butler from Miami. While many thought that might take them out of the running for Vooch, multiple insiders are reporting that’s not the case. K.C. Johnson, who is as connected to the Bulls as anyone, reported this morning that despite Vucevic’s comments last night about not expecting to be dealt, the Warriors and Bulls talks surrounding the big man haven’t died yet.

Despite Vooch saying this ⬇️ last night, the Warriors-Bulls talk hasn’t fully died, I’m told. Four and a half hours to go . . . t.co/01HG2tmpTa

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst also doesn’t think that Vooch to The Bay noise has been silenced. Windhorst reported this morning on “Get Up” that the Warriors could still be looking to add a big man and pointed out that, despite trading for Butler, they still have expiring contracts they can deal.

Could The Warriors Still Add Nikola Vucevic?

Last night when the Warriors pulled off the deal for Butler, I was pretty much resigned to the fact that Vooch wasn’t getting dealt. However, the reporting from Johnson and Windhorst obviously gives me some hope that this can still get done in the coming hours. I mean, after the initial shock of the Butler trade has subsided, there is still a reasonable deal that can be made.

The Dubs still have four expiring contracts at their disposal that they can use in a deal, and they also have several future first-round picks. They’re low on second-round picks at the moment, as they’ve shipped many of them out already. I’m not sure there’s enough second-round draft capital to entice Chicago into a trade, but it feels like a deal based around a heavily protected first-round pick could still be on the table. And it probably should be for both sides!

The Warriors are essentially all in on winning a title in the next 2-3 seasons, and Vucevic is a piece that would fit in really well. They have their defensive-minded big in Draymond Green, and Vooch’s catch-and-shoot ability, as well as his pick-and-roll game, would play very nicely in Golden State’s lineup.

SNY reported this morning that Chicago’s asking price for Nikola Vucevic remains high and that they were looking for first-round draft capital that wasn’t heavily protected. However, if the Warriors come back to the table just before the deadline with a Top-10 protected or Lottery-protected first-round pick, as well as a few expiring contracts, Arturas Karnisovas should absolutely take it.

In addition to Vucevic, the Bulls might still look to find new homes for the three players they acquired in the Zach LaVine trade – Zach Collins, Tre Jones, and Kevin Huerter. It’s very up in the air as to whether they’ll be able to accomplish that, but they’ll certainly try.

We’ll see what happens as the 2:00 PM CT trade deadline approaches. Only a few hours remain!
