A BUSY motorway has been SHUT due to a huge diesel spill spreading over half a mile, as drivers are warned of 90-minute delays.
Long delays are expected on the M5 in the West Country towards Bristol and Gloucestershire on Thursday, February 6.
Junction 24 for Bridgwater South and junction 23 for Bridgwater North is closed.
National Highways said: “The M5 in Somerset is closed northbound between J24 and J23 near Bridgwater due to a large diesel spillage. The spillage from a heavy goods vehicle fuel tank, has spread for approximately half a mile down the carriageway.
“Emergency services including Avon and Somerset Police are on scene. National Highways Traffic Officers are also in attendance assisting with traffic management. Contractors will be attending to assist with clear-up works.”
Traffic and travel service Inrix said: “Diversion – exit at J24 (Bridgwater South), along the A38 towards Bridgwater.”
