A succession of young women were murdered or disappeared without trace in the Leinster area of Ireland in the late 80s and 90s in what became known as “the vanishing triangle”.
Extensive police investigations and searches over the years failed to unearth any clues as to what happened to them.
Their stories are the inspiration behind a chilling crime drama about to land on Channel 5 called The Vanishings.
Written by Ivan Kavanagh, it stars Downton Abbey‘s Allen Leech and India Mullen from Normal People as police detective and investigative journalist leading the hunt.
It first aired in the US in 2023 under the title The Vanishing Triangle and has since been broadcast in Ireland and on Acorn TV in the UK last year.

Reactions to the article flood in including a letter which appears to be from her mother’s killer, hinting at the kidnapping of another woman.
The letter comes with two polaroid shots: one of her cowering in a wardrobe and another more recent one of a woman’s hands tied together.
Fearing the killer will strike again Wallace enlists the help of Garda detective David Burkely and they begin working together to cut through police red tape to get to the bottom of the investigation.
After making a pivotal discovery, it appears the killer’s reemergence may be tied to the recent disappearance of a young woman named Amy Reynolds.

India Mullen stars as newspaper reporter Lisa Wallace, whose own mother was murdered 20 years ago.
The Irish actress, 31, rose to prominence in the Irish soap opera Red Rock as Katie Kiely and appeared in the 2017 BBC dramatisation of Little Women.
More recently, she played Peggy in the hit series based on Sally Rooney’s book Normal People and Samantha in the comedy drama Brassic.
Allen Leach

The Irish actor, 43, will be very familiar to UK audiences as one of the stars of the period drama television series and films Downton Abbey.
He has also appeared in the films Imitation Game, Bohemian Rhapsody and Cold Meat.
And he played Elliott Fielding in the psychological thriller Too Good To Be True last year.

Aaron Monaghan takes on the role of detective constable Gareth Brennan in the show, who offers to help Burkely in his investigation.
Monaghan, 44, played Declan in the 2022 Bafta award-winning film The Banshees of Inisherin.
He played Sean Prendergast in the television series Hidden Assets and more recently Derry Fallon in The Gone.
Laoise Sweeney

Sweeney will be well known to viewers as Hervor from the series Vikings: Valhalla.
She played Charlotte in the sitcom Dead Canny and appeared in the Irish drama Der Irland-Krimi as Lizzy O’Hanlon last year.
The Vanishings was filmed in Ireland in late 2022, with locations in and around Dublin and County Wicklow used for the backdrop.
The coastal town of Bray and the holiday resort of Greystones, both in County Wicklow, are used for the setting of some of the episodes.
The Wicklow Mountains and Bray Head can be seen in the background of some of the scenes.
Dalkey Island, just off the mainland of Ireland, also features in the series.

The Vanishings is a six-part series which will begin broadcasting on Channel 5 on Thursday 6 February at 9pm.
It starts with a feature length double episode, with the remaining installments shown on successive Thursdays.
