Brookfield discusses plans for former banquet hall

BROOKFIELD — A presentation at Monday’s regular trustees meeting gave officials and residents a better idea of what will happen to a Bedford Road banquet hall.

Brookfield Superintendent Toby Gibson, who was joined by Mike Wilson, executive director of SCOPE Senior Services, said they were still in the process of finalizing the purchase of Tiffany’s Banquet Center, which the Brookfield Board of Education approved executing a purchase and sale agreement with the owners of last November. He expects the sale to be completed between the end of April or the beginning of May.

Gibson said that while they plan on expanding their STEM and CTE (Career and Technical Education) courses, they’re also trying to provide social services for families. This led to the district finding Family & Community Services Inc, which provides “over 80” social services in the Northeast Ohio and Trumbull County area — including SCOPE.

“What we’re going to do — it’s still tentative, nobody signed papers or anything — is put a senior center in part of Tiffany’s, which will allow services for individuals in the community I think 55 and older if I’m not mistaken,” Gibson said. “It also provides access to over 80 social services for our liaison and our administration for our families.”

Wilson explained to trustees that SCOPE operates 14 centers in three counties, six of which are in Trumbull, overseeing 10,000 senior citizens. It offers activities and programs for nutrition, painting and technology.

Wilson said they see an uptick of senior citizens looking for technological help in January and February because families give them cell phones, laptops and computers and they bring in unopened boxes seeking help.

If a senior center were to be put into the former Tiffany’s building, SCOPE would handle its operation, including any grant writing, Wilson said.

Wilson said that while they already help out throughout the county, SCOPE already has been taking care of 16 families in the township through its food pantry program.
