The Golden State Warriors have landed Jimmy Butler.
After months of reports about the organization wanting to upgrade Stephen Curry’s supporting cast, the franchise has made a move for one of the hottest names on the market. According to Shams Charania of ESPN, the Warriors will send Andrew Wiggins, a first-round pick, and more to the Miami Heat.

To no surprise, the Jimmy Butler trade saga has been a rollercoaster. Things soured between him and the Miami Heat a couple of months back as trade rumors began to swirl. Pat Riley eventually released a statement insisting that the team would not move their franchise centerpiece amid the speculation, but Butler forced his hand when he proceeded to demand a trade.
Things got very ugly from there. Miami would suspend Butler twice for conduct detrimental to the team before handing him an indefinite suspension. The Phoenix Suns were long rumored as the likely landing spot for the superstar, but Bradley Beal’s contract and no-trade clause proved to be a hurdle they couldn’t overcome.
© Jim Rassol-Imagn ImagesThe Warriors were reportedly one of Butler’s initial preferred landing spots, but ESPN’s Brian Windhorst shared earlier this week that Butler’s camp would not commit to the organization long-term. I guess that may have been a leverage play, however, as the Warriors perhaps made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. Jimmy Butler will apparently sign a two-year, $121 million extension immediately upon joining Golden State, per Charania.
Once again, it sure feels like Jimmy G. Buckets got his way.
Impact on the Bulls
All things considered, this trade sure feels like bad news for the Chicago Bulls. The Golden State Warriors were coined the most likely suitor for Nikola Vucevic over the last month or so. While the interest seemed to die down in recent days as the Warriors sought a more significant upgrade, there were reports as recently as Wednesday stating that Vucevic remains their Plan B. Welp.
To be sure, I believe a trade between the Bulls and Warriors isn’t completely impossible to pull off, but would that be something Mike Dunleavy Jr. seriously considers? There is also always a chance that another suitor emerges for Vucevic at the last second, as he remains one of the best big men on the market. But I guess this is why we started to receive reports on Tuesday night that the Bulls’ deadline sell-off could be cut short. Not great!
