All Eyes Are On Trey Smith at the Super Bowl

There are many reasons to tune in to watch Super Bowl LIX, but Trey Smith is at the top of my list.

The Kansas City Chiefs starting right guard is a player to keep tabs on in Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles. I have had my eyes on Smith as a possible target for a Chicago Bears team seeking to upgrade the offensive line this offseason for quite some time. And with free agency opening its doors next month, I feel incentivized to watch Trey Smith in the biggest game of the year.

Of course, I am not alone in wanting to watch how Trey Smith performs on Super Bowl Sunday. The folks at CHGO made it known that the offensive lineman is on their wish list, too:

Upgrading the offensive line is a high priority for the Chicago Bears this offseason. And if this front office doesn’t take advantage of the gobs of cap space at its disposal, I will be highly disappointed. But if General Manager Ryan Poles can swing for the fences and bring in Trey Smith, that would be a bit of welcome news.

There will be so much to watch on Super Bowl Sunday. A pair of star quarterbacks will be center stage, with Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts squaring off. Both teams have waves of talent throughout the skill positions. The Eagles have Saquon Barkley, DaVonta Smith, AJ Brown, and others. Meanwhile, the Chiefs have Travis Kelce, Isiah Pacheco, DeAndre Hopkins, and others. The battle between Andy Reid and Vic Fangio is going to be great. I also have high hopes for the Kendrick Lamar halftime show and a fresh batch of commercials.

And yet, the player I want to watch most is Trey Smith. Admittedly, it is going to be difficult. After all, few people go into Super Bowl Sunday with the desire to watch offensive linemen go to work. And fewer go into the day wanting to watch interior offensive linemen in the trenches. But Smith is different. The Pro Bowl right guard is playing at the top of his game and is on the cusp of free agency. Considering the Bears’ needs along the offensive line, I don’t feel as if I’ll be alone in keeping an eye on No. 65 for the Chiefs.

Whether Trey Smith makes it onto the open market remains in question. I struggle to envision a scenario where Kansas City allows one of its top offensive linemen to leave via free agency. However, the salary cap is not a myth (ask the New Orleans Saints!), and the Chiefs can’t pay everyone. And because there is a perception that interior offensive linemen aren’t as valuable as tackles, K.C. could decide to reallocate funds that would otherwise go to Smith and invest them elsewhere. As was discussed recently, that isn’t out of the realm of possibility.

And neither is the idea of a tag-and-trade scenario. Last offseason, Kansas City used the Franchise Tag to retain cornerback L’Jarius Sneed before dealing him to the Tennessee Titans for an exchange of 2024 seventh-round picks and a 2025 third-rounder. I am not sure if the Bears would benefit from a tag-and-trade situation, but I can see where it could help Chicago’s cause if that was how the cookie crumbled and GM Ryan Poles was able to finagle his way into cutting a deal with his former employer.

In the end, I am looking forward to the Super Bowl for many reasons. I’ll enjoy watching Trey Smith try to hold it down in the trenches. But once the game goes final, we can officially begin our unofficial obsessive offseason watch of one of the best possible free agent offensive line targets.
