Stat, Viz, Quiz is the Opta Analyst football newsletter. This week’s edition looks at Ruben Amorim’s dreadful home record as Manchester United manager, Arsenal’s passing against Man City and Burnley’s remarkable defensive record.
Another home game, another setback for Manchester United and Ruben Amorim. It’s all becoming very concerning, isn’t it? Or maybe you’re enjoying every second of it…
Either way, Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace was Amorim’s fifth home Premier League defeat at the helm. He’s hit that mark all too soon, and we put his tough start into context.
Elsewhere, in this week’s edition of our newsletter, we dive into Arsenal‘s silky passing from their humbling of Manchester City. We’re also addressing Burnley’s remarkable defensive numbers in this week’s Ask Opta question, and, of course, we’ll have a quiz for you to get stuck into.

After a run of three consecutive wins in all competitions, Manchester United were brought back down to earth with a bump by Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Sunday. In a game where Ruben Amorim experimented with deploying midfielder Kobbie Mainoo as a central striker – leaving Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee on the bench – it was an actual striker in Jean-Philippe Mateta who did the damage. The Frenchman scored a second-half brace to seal Palace’s fourth victory at Old Trafford in the last six seasons.
This latest setback marked United’s fifth home league defeat under Amorim, which is fairly concerning given he’s only overseen seven such matches. No Manchester United manager has reached five home losses in fewer home games in their Premier League history.
Amorim has hit five home defeats twice as fast as the much-maligned David Moyes, while Erik ten Hag took 28 home matches to suffer the same number. Neither José Mourinho nor Ralf Rangnick ever reached five home league defeats during their Old Trafford tenures.
United have now lost seven of their first 13 league home matches this season, their joint most at this stage of a league campaign, along with 1893-94 (also seven home defeats in 13).
Since the beginning of last season, only Wolves (16) have lost more Premier League home matches than Manchester United’s 13.
It’s the Theatre of Dreams alright… just for the opponents.
VIZ – Silky, Silky Arsenal
Ethan Nwaneri capped off a dominant Arsenal display with a stoppage-time goal in their emphatic 5-1 victory over Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
His strike – Arsenal’s fifth of the match – came at the end of a 36-pass sequence involving all 10 outfield players, lasting just two seconds shy of two minutes. To add to City’s frustration, the full-time whistle blew immediately after Nwaneri’s goal, meaning Pep Guardiola’s side never touched the ball again.
How Excited Should Arsenal Be About Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri?
2 days ago Ali TweedaleIt was the longest passing move leading to a Premier League goal since 23 September 2023, when Man City themselves gave Nottingham Forest a lesson in possession with purpose. Rúben Dias’ seventh minute strike at the Etihad Stadium ended an open-play sequence move of 46 passes in a move that lasted two minutes and 17 seconds.
Arsenal’s 36-pass build-up was the third-longest sequence leading to a Premier League shot this season; two longer sequences (37 passes) ended without a goal. It was also Arsenal’s longest open-play passing move of the match, a fitting way to close out a resounding victory.
QUIZ – Poor Lewis Dunk
Another round of Premier League action can only mean one thing: quiz time. Answers at the bottom of the page.
1. Lewis Dunk has scored seven own goals in the Premier League. Only one player has scored more than that in Premier League history. Who is that unlucky fellow?
2. Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri (17y 318d) and Myles Lewis-Skelly (18y 129d) became the youngest players to score in the Premier League against the reigning champions since who scored for Everton against Arsenal in March 2003?
3. Officially clocked at 10.18 seconds, where does Abdoulaye Doucouré’s opener for Everton rank in terms of the all-time fastest Premier League goals?
4. Mohamed Salah scored his 20th goal of the Premier League campaign on Saturday, hitting that milestone for the fifth time. Which three players are the only ones who have scored 20+ goals in more different campaigns?
5. Nottingham Forest pair Chris Wood and Anthony Elanga have combined for 11 goals since the start of last season. Only one duo has combined for more in that time frame. Who?
Ask Opta
This week’s question comes from Ram Seevey, who asks: “Saw Burnley kept yet another clean sheet at the weekend. I make it 8 in a row in the Championship now. That feels pretty long?”
Do you have a stats-based football question you want to Ask Opta? If so, send it to [email protected] and we’ll do our best to provide you with the answer in a future edition of SVQ.
Answer:
You’re spot on Ram, Burnley are putting up some truly staggering defensive numbers. They actually kept another clean sheet in midweek as well against Oxford, which takes their streak to nine clean sheets in a row in the Championship. That is one of just 12 runs of 9+ consecutive clean sheets in Football League history.
The last side to record a longer run was Torquay United in August 2010, when they registered 10 straight clean sheets. Burnley can match that record at home to Hull next week.

ChampionshipThe Great Wall of Burnley: The Staggering Numbers Behind the Best Defence in Europe
3 hours ago Oliver HopkinsThe all-time English football record belongs to Manchester United, who went 14 consecutive games without conceding between November 2008 and February 2009. During that run, Edwin van der Sar famously kept his goal intact for 1,310 minutes, or almost 22 hours of football.
The problem – insofar as you can have a problem when you’re on a 19-game unbeaten run in all competitions – for Scott Parker’s men is that they’re struggling to find the net themselves. They are second in the table thanks to their incredible defensive record, but are one of just five Championship sides to average fewer than 1.0 non-penalty expected goals per game, while aside from Blackburn (34), they are the lowest scorers in the top half of the table. Burnley fans won’t care a bit, though.
