American Heart Month: Weld County offers programs to improve heart health

The Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment encourages taking small steps toward better heart health.

February marks American Heart Month to raise awareness about heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States, according to a Weld County news release. People with “high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity and diabetes” have an increased risk of heart disease.

A recent Weld County Community Health Survey shows 29% of adults have high blood pressure. The same survey reported 65% of adults and 29% of children are overweight or obese.

Bob McDonald, the department’s health education, communication and planning director, said prioritizing heart health doesn’t mean drastic lifestyle changes. “Small daily choices add up over time,” he was quoted in the release, to keep hearts strong such as “eating well, staying active and managing stress.”

People in the Diabetes Prevention Program use nutrition, exercise and stress management to reduce their risk of type 2 diabetes.

Healthy Eating, Active Living, (remembered with the acronym HEAL), promotes staying active and eating healthy through balanced nutrition to support heart health.

Cooking Matters educates Weld County families about shopping smart to prepare affordable, yet heart-healthy meals.

“Programs like Diabetes Prevention, HEAL and Cooking Matters help residents make these changes in a supportive and sustainable way,” McDonald said.
