Philadelphia Eagles secret Super Bowl weapon to take down Chiefs who built ‘best roster in the NFL’

THE Philadelphia Eagles’ secret weapon to win the Super Bowl won’t be on the field on Sunday.

In fact, that weapon will be watching the game alongside other executives from the ownership box.

Howie Roseman joined the Eagles 25 years ago, rising through the ranks before becoming general manager in 2010.

He is seen as one of, if not the best executive in the NFL for his expert roster construction no matter the situation he is in.

Roseman is an expert in taking an already winning squad and rebuilding it to an even better one through unorthodox strategies.

“If everyone does the same thing, the league is set up that those teams are probably going to be in the middle of the pack,” Roseman told the Wall Street Journal.

”You’re going to have to be a little out-of-the-box to break through.”

Outside of the box is exactly how the Eagles’ roster is constructed.

Unlike their Super Bowl opponents in the Kansas City Chiefs, the Eagles have lacked stability.

Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes have been paired up for seven years alongside many other pieces on the roster.

Meanwhile, the Eagles have rotated through multiple coaches, quarterbacks, and running backs over the seven years that span between their three recent Super Bowl appearances.

The only thing that has been consistent is Roseman in the front office recycling his roster into a contender.

“He’s never done,” Catherine Hickman, a Cleveland Browns assistant general manager, said.

“It’s always, ‘Let’s go through a few more layers, a few more ideas.’ He never, ever stops.”

Roseman completely refreshed his defensive unit this season, turning them into the best group in the league.

Eight of the 11 starters on the Eagles defense are different than last season.

Roseman made the biggest signing of this offseason when he brought Saquon Barkley to Philadelphia.

Barkley left the rival New York Giants for a three-year, $38 million deal with the Eagles and has since become one of the best players in the NFL.

He rushed for 2,000 yards in 16 games this season, and is the main reason the Eagles are now in the Super Bowl.

“[He has been a] huge, huge player and person for this team. And [signing him was] not a hard trigger to pull,” Roseman told ESPN.

“I think I’m being consistent with what I said in March — was extremely confident in the player and the person.

“I’d like to say he’s exceeded expectations, but he’s always been one of the best players I’ve ever seen whenever I’ve watched him and I have always known about what kind of person he is because it’s not hard to find that out.

“So I’m really not surprised by any of this, and I don’t say that in an arrogant way, it’s based on who he is, nothing to do with me, because this is who he’s always been.

“And I’m just glad everyone gets to see that.”

Every player on the Eagles team has a touch of Roseman’s influence on them, and he has expertly gotten value out of overlooked players.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts became a star after being a second-round pick.

Offensive lineman Jordan Mailata went from a seventh-round pick to an All-Pro player.
