America’s largest breakfast chain rolls out 50 cent surcharge per egg from today – real reason behind ‘targeted’ fee

WAFFLE House has explained why it has resorted to the decision to impose a surcharge per egg.

Customers are being charged an extra 50 cents per egg that they order at diners across the US.

Waffle House is America’s largest breakfast chain with more than 2,000 sites across the country.

But, on Monday, chiefs rolled out the egg surcharge.

“’Consumers and restaurants are being forced to make difficult decisions,” a chain spokesperson said.

“We are continuously monitoring egg prices and will adjust or remove the surcharge as market conditions allow.”

Restaurant chiefs couldn’t say how long the egg surcharge would remain in place.

But, they did say that they hoped it would be “short lived.”

Egg prices have rocketed as farmers across the nation struggle to combat a bird flu outbreak.

Officials at the Department of Agriculture fear egg prices could rise by 20% this year.

Eggs were 36.8% more expensive in December 2024 than they were in December 2023.

Vice president JD Vance warned that price drops may not be sudden.

“Prices are going to come down, but it’s going to take a little bit of time,” he told CBS News on Sunday.

Waffle House’s decision has not been received warmly by diners.

“Egg surcharge? Really? That’s gonna backfire,” one X user posted.

“The world really has gone to hell,” another lamented.

Diners said they would switch to fruit now the levy on eggs has been rolled out.

But, others fear that such moves could prove detrimental.

“This is the end for most of these places,” a diner warned.

“Many [are] not going to eat out.”

Furious diners have vowed to boycott Waffle House until the egg surcharge is dropped.

While, others appear to be calling for Denny’s bosses to open restaurants in their local areas.
