South Carthage resident, Mr. Wayne Givens, was discovered in respiratory distress by his wife at their Hogans Creek Road home on Thursday afternoon. He was pronounced deceased at Highpoint Health – Riverview at 5:20 p.m. Thursday January 30, 2025. An assistance call for help from Smith County E-911 was received at 4:05 p.m.
Funeral services from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home were held on Monday afternoon February 3rd. Wayne’s cousin, Pastor Lanny Thomas assisted by Bro. Zary Shealy, officiated the services. There will be a private burial at a later date in the Garden of Everlasting Life at the Smith County Memorial Gardens.
The youngest of three children, two daughters and a son, he was born Roy Wayne Givens in the Turkey Creek Community on August 28, 1948 and was the son of the late Roy C. Givens who died November 16, 1980 at the age of 56 and Sadie Ethel Thomas Givens Driver who died March 2, 2009 at the age of 83.
A sister, Betty June Givens-Key preceded Mr. Givens in death at the age of 68 on November 14, 2014.
He attended Smith County High School.
Mr. Givens was united in marriage to South Carthage native, the former Charlotte Virginia (Jenny) Sanders on February 12, 1966. The ceremony was performed by Wayne’s uncle, Justice of the Peace Calvin Givens, at Wayne’s mother’s home in the Turkey Creek Community.
Mr. Givens was a retired hoist operator for the former Pasminco Zinc Mine Corporation and retired in 2004 with over thirty-five years of loyal service.
He was a member of the South Carthage Missionary Baptist Church.
His hobby was collecting model cars and he and Jenny enjoyed vacations and going on cruises.
Mr. Givens was a soft spoken, easy going individual, who unconditionally loved his family deeply and their love for him was returned.
Surviving in addition to his wife Jenny of just 14 days short of their fifty-ninth anniversary is their son, Mike Givens of South Carthage; three grandchildren, Amber Garmon and husband Matt of the Silver Point Community, Alicia Roberts and husband Brad of Lebanon, Jonathan Givens of South Carthage; seven great-grandchildren, McKenzey, Jacob, and Wesley Roberts, Clare, Magnolia, and Stella Garmon, Kira Rose Givens, sister, Nancy Givens Gann of Lebanon.
The Givens family requests memorials to the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society.
