If you missed the very big Chicago sports news last night, the Bulls finally did it: Zach LaVine has been traded.
Former MLB Commissioner Fay Vincent passed away over the weekend at the age of 86. Vincent served in the role from 1989 until 1992, when a majority of owners forced him out. It was a particularly tumultuous time for the business of the sport, during which Vincent, by his own words, tried to do what he felt was best for the sport and for the fans. That did not always put him in the good graces of his bosses, the owners, a tension we have seen play out in the decades that followed. Here is something he told the AP in 2023, which I think he’d want everyone to hear upon his passing:“I had the conviction that being commissioner was a public trust. I tried to do what I thought was best for the game and the public who cared so much about it. I had mixed results. Sometimes I’m pleased with what I did. The tragedy of baseball is the single biggest thing I left undone was to build a decent relationship between the owners and the players. I thought somebody would take over after me and get that done. If I died tomorrow, that would be the big regret, is that the players and the owners still have to make some commitment to each other to be partners and to build the game.”
The SECRET behind the Filthiest Pitch Greg Maddux ever threw. ? pic.twitter.com/F0f0bGQjrR
— Rob Friedman (@PitchingNinja) February 2, 2025 In my mind, Maddux gets even MORE credit now for that pitch being so bonkers. Yes, it was because the ball was scuffed, but he knew exactly how to use the scuff to make his pitches do what he wanted them to do. It was a perfectly legal opportunity to get an edge, and Maddux maximized it to the extreme. It’s much harder to get a scuffed ball nowadays because they replace the ball so much more frequently after it’s put into play, but hey, here’s hoping the Cubs still teach it at their academies. “If you notice a scuff, here’s how you can use it on each of the following pitches.” Not telling guys to intentionally scuff balls, of course, because that’s illegal. Just saying, if you notice a scuff is already there … I don’t want to bury this at the end of the Bullets, but I also am not entirely sure what Bruce Levine means, so I don’t want to feature it TOO prominently and get folks all excited:This we know, the Cubs are still actively involved in Alex Bregman talks.Scott Boras has conversations going with numerous clubs.Extending the offers to 6 years is t.co/0PYY2kT6my source says a six year offer is on the table, but opt outs and lanuguge apply.
— Bruce Levine (@MLBBruceLevine) February 2, 2025 My best read here is that Levine is reporting that the Cubs are still involved on Bregman, as we’ve been hearing. Furthermore, there are a number of other teams involved, one of which has offered six years (albeit with opt outs and other unique language?). Bregman’s agent, Scott Boras, is trying to get more offers up to six years. The Cubs may or may not be at six years, but it sure seems extreeeeeemely unlikely based on all other reporting that they are interested in Bregman, if at all, only on a short-term deal. I will reiterate my thought, by the way, that the Tigers signing Jack Flaherty COULD be a sign that they’ve moved on (financially) from Bregman, and maybe his market is moving closer to a deal. That all blends, by the way, with the Cubs’ (and others’) interest in a trade with the Padres that would require money, which may or may not put Bregman out of reach financially. So there’s clear overlap, and Spring Training starts in a week. This is coming to a head. Read More Details
