US President Donald Trump has said that he ordered air strikes on members of the Islamic State (IS) group in Somalia on Saturday.
He said the strikes, carried out by the U.S. Africa Command, had “killed many terrorists”.
“This morning I ordered precision Military air strikes on the Senior ISIS Attack Planner and other terrorists he recruited and led in Somalia,” he wrote on Truth Social.
“These killers, who we found hiding in caves, threatened the United States and our Allies.
“The strikes destroyed the caves they live in, and killed many terrorists without, in any way, harming civilians.
“The message to ISIS and all others who would attack Americans is that “WE WILL FIND YOU, AND WE WILL KILL YOU!”
The strikes were coordinated with Somalia’s government, according to a statement released by US Africa Command. “The command’s initial assessment is that multiple ISIS-Somalia operatives were killed in the airstrikes and no civilians were harmed,” the statement read.
The command said that it would continue to assess the results of the operation and provide further information as appropriate.
In a statement, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said that the strikes further degraded the group’s ability “to plot and conduct terrorist attacks” and “sends a clear signal that the United States always stands ready to find and eliminate terrorists who threaten the United States and our allies”.
The US has carried out a number of strikes in Somalia over the years, including a strike in 2023 which killed IS leader Bilal al-Sudani and 10 of his operatives in a remote mountainous cave in northern Somalia.
A military strike last May killed three IS militants in Somalia, according to the US Africa Command.
The Somali branch of IS was formed in 2015 by a group of defectors from the al-Qaeda affiliated al-Shabab group. There are thought to be hundreds of ISIS militants in Somalia, mostly in the Cal Miskaat mountains, according to the International Crisis Group.
