I think of these two guys in a similar category as far as Cubs rumors go. Although the players and situations are quite different – Dylan Cease is a starting pitcher who’d be acquired via trade for a single year, while Alex Bregman is a position player who’d be signed on multi-year free agent contract – they lump together for me in terms of their potential impact on the Cubs (big!) and likelihood of happening for the Cubs (little!).
So a couple quick rumor’y notes on guys to whom the Cubs have been connected …
The Cubs, who’ve reportedly talked to the Padres about Dylan Cease, get another mention on the topic here from Jon Heyman:
“The Mets showed they don’t like long-term deals for pitchers when they didn’t pursue Max Fried or Corbin Burnes, but they’ve been trying for Padres rental ace Dylan Cease (and presumably would also consider rotation mate Michael King).
The Cubs also are involved. But while their prospect list is ranked higher, with highly regarded 3B prospect Matt Shaw understandably off limits in rental deals, the Padres may prefer the Mets’ list, including Brandon Sproat, Jett Williams and Luisangel Acuña.”
Maybe that’s just a leverage mention on the Cubs (or the Mets), but it feels just as likely it’s the Padres trying to get other possibly interested teams to make a phone call. I’m sure the Cubs would love to land Cease, who’d be the kind of impact power righty they don’t have in the rotation right now, but I also question how much they’d be willing to give up in a single-year trade after just having done so for Kyle Tucker.
Meanwhile, the Cubs also get a mention in Bob Nightengale’s latest on Alex Bregman’s free agency:
“The Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox have aggressively pursued Bregman this winter, with the Red Sox offering a four-year deal, according to the Boston Globe, while the Tigers are offering at least a five- or six-year deal ….
Yet, while there appeared to be momentum towards a possible reunion [with the Astros], nothing has changed. The Astros have not altered their six-year, $156 million proposal, or even formally put their offer back on the table ….
Meanwhile, the Cubs lurk just in case Bregman suddenly changes his mind and is interested in a short-term deal.”
That tracks with most of the other mentions on Bregman and the Cubs. Just insert the word “opportunistic” and you’ve got the gist.
