Chicago Cubs Sign Righty Brad Keller

The Chicago Cubs have signed righty Brad Keller to a minor league deal, per the team’s transaction log (and originally reported by Jacob Zanolla). The 29-year-old spent the 2024 season split between the Red Sox and White Sox, and split between MLB and Triple-A, finding success only at Triple-A with the Red Sox (where he pitched both in relief and in some starts).

How you best remember Keller, however, as a young Royals starting pitcher, putting up a 3.50 ERA from 2018-2020 over 78 appearances. He looked like he was going to be a guy for a long time to come. Unfortunately he struggled in 2021 and 2022, and then dealt with shoulder impingement syndrome in 2023. He signed a minor league deal with the White Sox before 2024, got a look in the big leagues, was DFA’d, and that’s how he wound up in the Red Sox org at midseason.

That is all to say, I’m not quite sure what Keller could be for the Cubs in 2025, and I’m not even sure what role they’ll try him out in. He’s got the pedigree and the past success, but it’s been several years since he pitched at that level. Keller isn’t old yet, though, and he’d be far from the first pitcher to succeed as a young guy, go through a period of struggle and injury, and then re-emerge as an effective big league pitcher.

In other words, seems like a perfectly solid minor league signing. Keller joins Brandon Hughes, Trevor Richards, Ben Heller, Phil Bickford, and Brooks Kriske as the current minor-league-deal-reclamation-types so far this offseason. I tentatively expect the Cubs are nearing the end of that group (and instead will add a sure-fire arm from here), though they’ll be opportunistic about signing any other pitchers who are maybe more big-league-certain, but who have to settle for minor league deals.
