Ian Cunningham is “In Contention” For the Jacksonville Jaguars GM Job

After missing out on the Tennessee Titans general manager job for the second time in three years, a recent vacancy could be a landing spot for Chicago Bears Assistant GM Ian Cunningham.

In the latest episode of The Adam Schefter podcast, the ESPN NFL insider name-checks Ryan Poles’ right-hand man as a candidate for the gig:

“Here is a name we need to have on our radar. I’m not saying he gets the job, but I will say that he is going to be in contention for the job — the Bears Assistant General Manager Ian Cunningham. He is going to be a candidate for that Jaguars GM job. Some would say he might be the leading candidate for the Jaguars GM job. I don’t know if he’s the leading guy or a guy. But he’s certainly going to be in the mix and a candidate to become the next general manager of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Watch that name, Ian Cunningham. His time is coming.”

Ooh, that is a spicy meatball from Schefty. Not only does he view Ian Cunningham as being in contention for the job, but it sounds like the Bears’ assistant general manager is being seen as a top candidate for the position. That would be a fun twist for Cunningham, who has been in the running for several GM gigs in recent years before falling short because a team went in a different direction.

Ian Cunningham could get his time to shine in Jacksonville

Earlier in the week, we discussed the possibility of Ian Cunningham becoming a Jaguars GM candidate. Seeing that ESPN’s Adam Schefter has since thrown the Bears’ assistant general manager’s name in the mix further solidifies early reporting on the situation. The Jaguars are a wild-card franchise. Jacksonville is unpredictable and odd things continue to happen whenever the Jags are on the cusp of making changes. You saw how that Liam Coen situation turned out, right? So stay tuned on that front.

If Ian Cunningham *DOES* get the Jaguars general manager job, the Bears will receive a pair of third-round picks — one in the 2025 NFL Draft and another in 2026. It would stink to lose a key cog in the front office, especially with the number of moves this team needs to make in order to become contenders this season. But getting compensatory draft picks and seeing someone from this front office get a chance to prove themselves on another level would be neat.
