Ohio university student among victims of D.C. plane crash

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- A 20-year-old student at an Ohio university was among those killed Wednesday night when an American Airlines passenger jet collided with an Army helicopter in Washington D.C.

Grace Maxwell was a junior at Cedarville University. The plane took off from her hometown of Wichita, Kansas.

    "As you can imagine, the past 24 hours have been very difficult for the Maxwell family and the Cedarville University community," a statement from the university read. "As a university, we do not desire to turn this tragic event into anything more than a way to honor Grace, her family and Jesus."

    Cedarville is a private Christian university of about 4,700 students about 60 miles west of Columbus.

    The Wichita Eagle reported that Maxwell was returning to Ohio after going home for the funeral of her grandfather. She was a biomedical engineering major, her father, Dean, told the Eagle.

    The plane was on its final approach to Reagan National Airport outside Washington, D.C., when it collided with the helicopter about 9 p.m. The plane split apart, and both aircraft fell into the Potomac River. A total of 67 people were believed to have been killed, with no survivors.
