Chicago Bears 2024 Exit Interviews: Kyler Gordon

The nightmare that was the 2024 Chicago Bears season is over. Before the transactional period starts and the roster changes begin, we will recap the seasons of most of the 53-man roster. Next up: We’re looking at the 2024 season of cornerback Kyler Gordon.

Kyler Gordon’s 2024 Snapshot

Kyler Gordon’s 2024 campaign was a somewhat mixed bag. The third-year cornerback logged a career-best 75 tackles and three fumble recoveries but failed to secure an interception after recording five in his first two seasons with Chicago.

When looking through Gordon’s PFF grades this season, the returns were a bit of a see-saw effect, with Gordon finishing the season strong with standout performances against the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers in Weeks 17 and 18. Gordon logged a 92.5 defensive grade and a 92.8 coverage grade in the Bears’ loss to the Seahawks on Thursday Night Football in Week 17. Gordon scored an 83.2 defensive grade, 78.5 tackling grade, and an 87.5 coverage grade in Chicago’s Week 18 upset victory over the Packers at Lambeau Field.

Gordon allowed 41 receptions, 472 yards, and a 71.9 percent reception rate in coverage this season, working primarily in the nickel for Chicago’s defense.

Gordon has been a solid nickelback for the Bears in his first three seasons, but I’m not sure he’s done enough to earn a big payday before the final year of his rookie deal. I’m still at a wait-and-see stance with Gordon, who will become an unrestricted free agent after the 2025 season unless he receives an extension from the Bears before then.

    Contract Status

Gordon is entering the final year of his rookie deal in 2025. He is scheduled to make $4.448 million, with $3.575 million coming via base salary and $873,714 via a prorated signing bonus. The Bears could create $3.57 million in cap savings with a dead cap hit of $873,714 if they cut Gordon before June 1.

    Turning the Page

Kyler Gordon was one of the better-performing individual players on a defensive unit that severely underperformed at times this season. While Gordon didn’t record an interception this season, he did log five passes defended, 75 tackles, and four tackles-for-loss. Since arriving in Chicago, he’s been a steady contributor and a safety blanket for the Bears in the nickel position, which has become a position that plays more downs than ever in the NFL. Still, he plays a position that can be deemed a lower priority as far as asset allocation goes, so we’ll probably see Gordon head into the final year of his rookie deal on an expiring contract.
