Slick road conditions cause closures, crashes during Thursday morning commute

DENVER (KDVR) — Snow began late Wednesday across parts of southern Colorado and pushed up into the Front Range overnight, making for some slick spots south and east of the Denver metro area.

A Pinpoint Weather Alert Day was issued for Thursday due to the lingering snow over the Palmer Divide and along Interstate 70, east of the metro. In total, areas could see 2-8 inches of snow.

Up to 1 inch of snow per hour expected in these Front Range areas Thursday

While Denver will see little, if any snow Thursday morning, the main impacts will be on the roads to the south and east.

    Road conditions Thursday morning

Here's what the roads look like as of 8 a.m. Thursday.

    Interstate 25

If you're heading to and from downtown Denver, there won't be much, if any snow, but the roads will be wet for the morning commute.

South of the metro, there are more snowpacked spots. FOX31's Carly Moore drove southbound on I-25 where precipitation was falling as a mix of rain and snow. Snow is sticking near Larkspur with some lane recognition.

The effects are already being seen. Just before 8 a.m., two right lanes were closed between Happy Canyon Road and Exit 184: CO 86 due to a crash. The road has since been reopened.

According to COtrip, a tool the Colorado Department of Transportation uses to track current road conditions, I-25 is wet in some areas. There's still a chance for some light snow showers and up to 2 inches of accumulation.

    Interstate 70

The mountains won't see much snow and are fairly clear Thursday morning. COtrip said areas between Silverthorne and Georgetown had icy spots. However, I-70 west of Denver and past Bennett was more snowpacked with some whiteout conditions, snow and ice all the way to the Kansas border.
