The Chicago Sky have welcomed back an old friend.
Annie Costabile of the Chicago Sun-Times was the first to report on Wednesday that point guard Courtney Vandersloot will rejoin the franchise. Agent Kagawa Colas went on to confirm the news to The Athletic, while Vandersloot wasted zero time changing her social media bio.
Vandersloot went into this offseason as one of the league’s top free agents after winning her second-ever title with the New York Liberty.

Courtney Vandersloot came into the league as a highly-touted prospect out of Gonzaga. The Sky selected her with the No. 3 pick in the 2011 WNBA Draft, and she would go on to become one of the franchise’s most famous and recognizable faces.
She spent a total of 12 seasons with the Sky, averaging 10.2 points, 6.6 assists, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.2 steals over her 359 games. When she departed the franchise in 2022, Vandersloot left as the all-time Sky leader in assists (2,386), steals (457), and minutes played (10,145). The 35-year-old also sits second in all-time points behind only her wife, sharpshooter Allie Quigley.
Vandersloot has spent her past two seasons with the New York Liberty, where she started all 70 regular season games she appeared in. Nonetheless, her role did begin to diminish during the 2024 campaign, as she averaged a career-low 22.3 minutes per game. The Liberty also chose to move her to the second unit come the postseason, where her minutes dipped to 14.3 per game on their run to the championship.
Vandersloot may not be the uptempo playmaker she once was, but there is no denying she still has the facilitating ability to make an immediate difference in Chicago. She holds one of the highest basketball IQs in the game, which is something a young Sky team desperately needs as they hope to make strides this season. Vandersloot will immediately be able to take on a critical starting role and help first-year head coach Tyler Marsh establish a new offensive identity.
The question now is whether or not the Vandersloot addition can help the Sky appear to more veteran free agents or trade targets. The organization made clear with the questionable dismissal of Teresa Weatherspoon that they expect to be a competitive team ASAP. To make that happen, they will have to continue to build out an experienced supporting cast around their young stars. Chicago owns the No. 3 pick in the upcoming 2025 WNBA Draft, so all eyes are on whether they will use that pick on another high-upside talent or dangle it in the trade market.
