The nightmare that was the 2024 Chicago Bears season is over. Before the transactional period starts and the roster changes begin, we will recap the seasons of most of the 53-man roster. Next up: We’re looking at the 2024 season of tight end Gerald Everett.
Gerald Everett’s 2024 Snapshot
Much like we hope becomes of Gerald Everett’s time with the Chicago Bears, this one is going to be a shorter post. Gerald Everett’s 2024 season with the Chicago Bears was as disappointing as any individual season I can remember. Everett caught eight passes for 36 yards in 17 games this season.
Tight end usage in the Shane Waldron/Thomas Brown offense was an issue across the board, with Cole Kmet also seeing a considerable decrease in targets. However, Everett was targeted only 12 times in 17 games and logged eight games with zero targets.
If Chicago moves on from Everett this offseason, he’ll have been paid roughly $685K per reception during his time here. Everett posted a respectable 72.6 pass-blocking grade over at PFF and, somehow, was only used in a pass-blocking role in nine of his 17 games this season.
When Everett was signed during the offseason, I was mildly excited for what he could bring to Chicago if he were used in a role similar to the one he had in Los Angeles the previous two seasons when he saw 70 and 87 targets in 2023 and 2022, respectively. Everett caught a combined 109 passes for 966 yards and seven touchdowns in those two seasons.
In the end, the tight end usage was disastrous, and that group was non-existent most days and largely ineffective and incorrectly deployed when they were involved in the game plan.
By the Numbers
Receptions: 8 Targets: 13 Receiving Yards: 36 Touchdowns: 0Contract Status
Everett signed a two-year, $9.1 million deal with the Bears last spring. Everett is due $5.06 million in base salary, $1 million in signing bonuses, and $440K in roster and workout bonuses in 2025. However, Chicago could move on from Everett with a pre-June 1 cut designation with a dead cap hit of $1 million and a cap savings of $5.48 million.

Turning the page is a perfect headline for this one. Chicago can turn the page, close the book on Gerald Everett, and gain a $5.48 million cap savings (with a meager $1 million in dead cap space) by cutting the veteran tight end before June 1.
I have a hard time believing that Chicago can’t find a better backup tight end option in free agency or the draft this offseason, and therefore, I don’t see Everett returning in 2025.
