What Was Jim Acosta Making at CNN When He Quit the Network?

On Tuesday, Jan. 28, Jim Acosta revealed on air that he quit his job at CNN rather than accept a move to a later time slot, putting an end to his nearly two-decade run at the network and leaving behind what was surely a decent salary (especially for a journalist).

Keep reading for everything we know about how much money Acosta was making when he left CNN, and what his net worth is in 2025.

Jim Acosta quit his job at CNN, where he worked for more than 18 years, after the network announced that it was moving Wolf Blitzer into his 10 a.m. Eastern time slot. Although the former chief White House correspondent was given an option to move to a later time slot, he passed it up.

Perhaps nodding to his reputation for challenging President Donald Trump, Acosta signed off his morning show by telling viewers, “Don’t give in to the lies. Don’t give in to the fear.”

Why did Jim Acosta quit CNN?

Acosta quit CNN because the network moved Wolf Blitzer into his usual 10 a.m. hour, offering him an arguably lesser time slot instead.

Acosta's salary is not public information. One report put his yearly pay at $700,000, another at $2 million, but neither has been substantiated, and you don't need to be Jim Acosta to know that the claims therefore do not pass journalistic muster.

What is Jim Acosta's net worth?

Acosta's net worth has been reported as being anywhere from $4 million to $10 million, estimates that include his earnings from CNN, real-estate and more. But, again, those numbers aren't coming from reliable sources.

In 2019, Acosta published The Enemy of the People: A Dangerous Time to Tell the Truth in America, a book that, at its heart, was about protecting freedom of the press.

What happened with Jim Acosta and Trump?

The former chief White House correspondent earned a reputation for challenging President Trump over the years, particularly during press conferences. He famously went head-to-head with the then 45th President of the United States in November 2018, when he challenged Trump for characterizing a migrant caravan approaching the U.S. border as an "invasion."

Trump, who was visibly irritated, called Acosta a "rude, terrible person" and told him to "just sit down."

Trump reacted to the news of Acosta's CNN departure on Truth Social, saying, "Jim is a major loser who will fail no matter where he ends up."

How long was Jim Acosta working at CNN?

Acosta was with CNN for 18 years. He started at the network in 2007, served as chief White House correspondent during the Obama and Trump administrations, and ended his time there as anchor and chief domestic correspondent.
