It’s Official: Matt Eberflus is Joining the Dallas Cowboys

Matt Eberflus is returning to Chicago … as a member of the Dallas Cowboys’ coaching staff.

Eberflus, who was fired as the Bears’ head coach on the Friday after the team’s Thanksgiving loss to the Detroit Lions, has officially signed on as the new Cowboys defensive coordinator:

After garnering interviews with the Cincinnati Bengals and Atlanta Falcons earlier in the offseason, Matt Eberflus is returning to Dallas. Long before Eberflus was the Bears’ head coach, he was on staff with then-head coach Jason Garrett from 2011-17 coaching linebackers and serving as the team’s pass game coordinator. Eberflus left Dallas to be the Indianapolis Colts’ defensive coordinator from 2018-21 before becoming the Bears’ head coach in 2022. Now, Eberflus returns to work under Brian Schottenheimer. Considering his prior success as a defensive play-caller, perhaps a return to a defensive play-calling role is what is meant to be for the former Bears head coach.

We’re getting a Matt Eberflus vs. Ben Johson grudge match in Year 1

The 2025 NFL schedule won’t drop until spring, but we already know the Bears’ opponents for next season. And with the Cowboys scheduled to visit Soldier Field in 2025, I am ready to circle that particular game on my calendar whenever the schedule release hits the wire. Can you blame me? We are going to get a Ben Johnson vs. Matt Eberflus showdown this season. The storylines will be juicy. Considering how much television executives love putting the Bears and Cowboys on in primetime slots, I can’t help but imagine that this one will find a premier viewing window on FOX, CBS, NBC, Amazon Prime, or ESPN.

The Bears went 14-32 with Matt Eberflus as their head coach. Some of the early losses can be chalked up to taking over a rebuilding roster. However, it felt telling that the Bears stumbled at every turn when the team had any expectations thrust in their general direction in 2023 when the bar was raised. And when the team took steps backward in 2024, it became evident that change was necessary. Hence, President Kevin Warren and General Manager Ryan Poles pulled the plug on the Eberflus era when things went off the rails in a season in which the team was expected to compete for a playoff spot.

In the end, I think this will work out best for all parties. Matt Eberflus seems destined to be a defensive coordinator. And that is OK. Sometimes, you get overpromoted to the point where you realize what your true calling in life isn’t at the top of the pecking order. And while Ben Johnson hasn’t served as a head coach for a single game just yet, it is hard to imagine a scenario in which things could be worse under him than they were during the Eberflus era. In any case, I am looking forward to seeing these two square off in 2025. Are you?
