DETROIT – Local 4 will follow guidelines from the Associated Press when it comes to Trump Administration renaming the Gulf of Mexico and Mt. Denali.
President Donald Trump issued an executive action to “honor American greatness” by renaming those two geographical features.
The executive action changed the “Gulf of Mexico” to the “Gulf of America.” It changed Mt. Denali back to Mt. McKinley — the original name of the Alaskan mountain before it was changed by President Barack Obama.
Local 4 will follow AP style for these renamings. We will continue to refer to the “Gulf of Mexico” as such, but refer to the mountain as Mt. McKinley.
“The Associates Press Stylebook has long been the standard for newspapers, digital news and broadcast news operations as a source for establishing guidelines for names, grammar, spelling and punctuation,” said Sean McLaughlin, the vice president of news for Graham Media Group. “Graham Media Group has long used this reference as a guide for consistency in all of our media hubs. There is no compelling reason to deviate from their guidance on these two matters.”
If the AP makes a change, Local 4 will follow its guidelines.
