‘Spaceship-like’ three-wheel car could hit roadways later this year and solar panels add extra 8,000 miles to its range

A RADICAL three-wheeled car that’s powered by the sun is set to hit roadways later this year.

Built by a brand called Aptera Motors, a startup from California, the futuristic EV is powered by a 42 kWh battery and solar panels that can add up to 40 miles of range per day, or approximately 10,000 miles per year in sunny regions.

But according to a report by Car and Driver, even less sunny areas can benefit from the solar panels, which are still expected to provide around 8,000 miles annually.

Designed to reduce reliance on public charging networks, the little vehicle won’t exactly break the bank either; with a price set at $40,000.

But it could be as low as $28,000 for an eventual 250-mile variant.

It’s no slouch either, with the two-seater boasting a top speed of 101mph and a sub-six second 0-62mph time.

Described by onlookers as looking like a “spaceship”, Aptera unveiled its production-ready solar electric vehicle at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada, earlier this month.

The EV, which already has 50,000 potential buyers, with first deliveries set to take place this year.

The initial Launch Edition will feature 201 hp front-wheel drive, with an all-wheel-drive option planned.

While the prototype’s sparse interior and stiff ride reveal it’s still a work in progress, the production model promises practicality for short commutes.

Aptera was founded in 2006 before running out of money and liquidating in 2011.

The original founders – Anthony and Steven Fambro – relaunched the company in 2019.

Their vision is to appeal to daily commuters, with the average American’s commute clocking at around 30 miles, meaning the Aptera’s solar power should be more than enough for day-to-day use.

“All you’ve got to do is leave this out in the sun,” Anthony explained.

“It’s the most ubiquitous charging network in the world.”

If Aptera’s numbers are correct, this would vastly reduce owners’ reliance on inconsistent public charging networks for their EVs.

This comes as Uber is pitching in free rides to help teenagers without a license get around.

The ride share company’s new initiative helps teens who fail their road test by offering free rides for a month.

“Teens, we’ve got you covered until you can take your next test,” Uber said in a statement.

Uber’s offer covers up to six rides, capped at $20 each.

The promotion began on January 9 and is available until March 31, 2025.

    But there’s a catch.
