In a significant shift towards integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into everyday user experiences, Apple has activated its Apple Intelligence feature by default in the latest software updates for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. This change, introduced in the recent updates (iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS 15.3), signifies Apple's commitment to enhancing user interaction through AI technologies . Previously optional and requiring manual activation by users, the automatic enablement of Apple Intelligence indicates a strategic move to streamline user access to advanced features such as text rewriting, image generation, and content summarization.
Apple has issued iOS 18.3, along with a warning to update your iPhone now. That’s because iOS 18.3 fixes a hefty list of 29 vulnerabilities, one of which has already been used in attacks.
Apple doesn’t give much detail about the issues fixed in iOS 18.3, because it wants to give people as much time to update as possible before attackers can get hold of the details.
But the already exploited issue patched in iOS 18.3 is a flaw in CoreMedia tracked as CVE-2025-24085 that could see a malicious application able to elevate privileges.
Users will have to navigate to the Apple Intelligence page in the Settings app to turn it off, according to Apple.
The latest software update also includes one of the most notable examples so far of Apple rolling back an AI feature after it generated controversy and subpar results. Apple joins Google and Microsoft as companies that were forced to recall new AI features after they generated harmful content or "hallucinations" that weren't based in reality.
Apple Intelligence can take stacks of notifications and simplify them into a three-sentence notification. However, the BBC and other news outlets discovered in December that the feature can twist news headlines into inaccurate information.
Google's Threat Analysis Group (TAG) has been credited with discovering and reporting three vulnerabilities in the CoreAudio component (CVE-2025-24160, CVE-2025-24161, and CVE-2025-24163) that may lead to an unexpected app termination when parsing a specially crafted file.
With CVE-2025-24085 tagged as actively exploited, users of Apple devices are recommended to apply the patches to safeguard against potential threats.
The decision to activate Apple Intelligence automatically reflects a growing trend among technology companies to leverage AI capabilities more aggressively while simultaneously addressing potential pitfalls associated with misinformation. As users adapt to these changes in their devices' functionalities and capabilities, it will be essential for Apple to remain transparent about ongoing developments and maintain user trust through effective management of AI-generated content.
