Broncos assistant coach John Morton favored to land Lions offensive coordinator job, source says

John Morton is heard before he is seen on the practice field. Now, he is making noise in the offseason.

The Broncos passing game coordinator has emerged as the favorite to land the Detroit Lions offensive coordinator opening and is expected to interview with the team on Monday night, a source confirmed.

Morton, 55, has previous ties to Detroit head coach Dan Campbell. He worked for the Lions as a senior offensive assistant in 2022 before joining Sean Payton’s staff in Denver as a passing game coordinator two years ago.

Morton is known for his high-energy, vocal coaching style. He doesn’t hold back when pushing players to execute drills and plays. The Broncos offense improved last season with the arrival of rookie quarterback Bo Nix. Nix delivered 29 passing touchdowns with 12 interceptions, and Courtland Sutton posted a career-high 81 receptions, while Marvin Mims Jr. emerged as an explosive weapon over the final month of the season.

Denver’s coaching staff has been picked over this offseason. If Morton lands the job, he will see a familiar face in Chicago. The Bears hired former Broncos tight ends coach Declan Doyle as their offensive coordinator on Sunday. Morton served as the OC at USC and with the New York Jets in 2017.

Morton will be charged with keeping Detroit among the league’s elite offensively. Ben Johnson, now the Bears coach, turned the Lions into a problem for opposing defenses as quarterback Jared Goff hit his stride, leaning on the talent of running backs Jammyr Gibbs and David Montgomery and receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown.
