The New Orleans Saints’ Cap Shenanigans Are Finally Catching Up With Them

The New Orleans Saints have seen some of their top head coach targets fall off the board.

Aaron Glenn, who was a presumed favorite after coaching and playing in New Orleans, is off to the New York Jets. Meanwhile, another highly sought-after candidate is pulling out altogether:

Staying home: #Bills OC Joe Brady, the architect of the Buffalo offense, has elected to remain with the Bills and pull out of the #Saints HC search, per me and @TomPelissero.New Orleans had wanted to interview Brady a second time, along with Kellen Moore. NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reports that Joe Brady is sticking around with the Buffalo Bills as their offensive coordinator. Brady, who coached at LSU, interviewed virtually with the Saints earlier in the process and was expected to get a second (in-person) interview with the team. But before New Orleans could even make that happen, Brady took his name out of the running. As it stands, the Saints are the only team that began this offseason looking for a new head coach who has yet to make a hire. Ope!

NFL salary cap considerations could be impacting the Saints search for a new coach

What is wild about the New Orleans Saints not having a head coach in place by now is that they have been without a head coach since November. Do you remember when the Saints fired Dennis Allen after losing in Week 9? It is OK if you don’t, mind you. Firstly, because this is a no-judgment zone. But it also came less than 24 hours after the Las Vegas Raiders dumped Luke Getsy as their offensive coordinator. Oh … and the Bears were coming off a sobering loss of their own. It was a chaotic time, to be sure.

One thing that might be playing a major role in the lack of interest in the Saints gig is the team’s salary cap situation. New Orleans has long been known for its ability to make moves to get under the league’s salary cap despite racking up dead money from expired contracts on a yearly basis. But it seems as if kicking the can down the road is finally catching up to the Saints at a time when the team is trying to reel in a new head coach. Tough timing, to say the least.

The New Orleans Saints are $52,317,537 *OVER* the projected 2025 NFL salary cap of $272.5 million according to calculations at OverTheCap. Sure, there are seven other teams (Texans, Cowboys, Bills, Falcons, Dolphins, Seahawks, and Browns) that are in the red on the last Monday in January, no team is all that close to the Saints. Even with Cleveland having its issues with Deshaun Watson, New Orleans still clears by more than $22 million. Sheesh. It’s ugly out in the Big Easy — so much so that it could be negatively impacting the team’s search for a head coach.

While the Saints seem to be at a crossroads with aging contracts and dead cap hits handcuffing the franchise, the Chicago Bears have a healthy cap situation. The folks at OverTheCap have the Bears at $64,023,403 UNDER the projected salary cap for 2025. Only the Arizona Cardinals ($71.483 million), Washington Commanders ($87.58 million), Las Vegas Raiders ($92.332 million), and New England Patriots (a whopping $120.041 million) have more wiggle room to work with under the cap. And with all signs pointing to the team preparing to use some of that financial flexibility on improving the offensive line, I am looking forward to seeing what Chicago’s football team emerges with after the dust settles at the outset of free agency.

AROUND THE NFL: Super Bowl Rematch, Saints Coaching Search News, More

As for the squad in New Orleans, the search for a new head coach continues. Mike McCarthy, who interviewed with the Bears for their opening earlier in the month, remains a candidate. As does Kellen Moore, who is the offensive coordinator for the Super Bowl-bound Philadelphia Eagles. Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio writes that Kliff Kingsbury could be in play, too. But it sounds like the Washington Commanders offensive coordinator might be picky and could sit out this hiring cycle. So it’s not as if all hope is lost with the Saints. But if those candidates turn them down, then I’m unsure where they’ll turn to moving forward. Thankfully, that isn’t a problem we have to deal with in Chicago.

In the end, the Saints’ issues landing a head coach in this cycle could be the last bit of proof that the salary cap is real and isn’t a myth. For years, I’ve looked at New Orleans and believed the cap was a myth. But now? It sure isn’t looking that way.
