Border agents say they seized two separate loads of methamphetamines totaling 182 pounds within less than an hour earlier this month.

On the afternoon of Jan. 18th at around 3:20 p.m., Border Patrol agents in Campo stopped and searched a blue Dodge minivan westbound on Interstate 8 near the Buckman Springs exit.

The agents said they discovered nine foil-wrapped packages hidden in a compartment of the van. Tests confirmed the packages contained methamphetamine, with a total weight of 97.97 pounds.

The narcotics and the driver were turned over to sheriff’s deputies for further investigation and Border Patrol seized the minivan. The driver was sent to a local Border Patrol station for processing.

Not long after the first incident, border agents stopped a woman driving a Honda sedan with her two children on the westbound 8 near the Buckman Springs exit.

A search led to the discovery of 80 cellophane-wrapped packages hidden throughout the vehicle. Tests confirmed the packages contained nearly 84 pounds of methamphetamine.

The Drug Enforcement Administration took custody of the 22-year-old and the drugs for further investigation.

“Two significant drug loads were taken off of our streets by our dedicated agents,” said San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent Patricia McGurk-Daniel.

“Thankfully, two children were also removed from a dangerous situation.”
