Day 22 of the Chicago Bears offseason. Conference Championship Sunday is over. And now, the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs must enjoy a harrowing bye week that no one enjoys.
ICYMI: The Bears have reportedly decided on two new coordinators. Unless some unforeseen snag pops up, it will be Declan Doyle serving in the role of offensive coordinator under new head coach Ben Johnson. Meanwhile, Dennis Allen — as expected — is checking in as the team’s defensive coordinator. The Allen hire is an easy one to understand and like. In an ideal world, Allen becomes to Ben Johnson what Wade Phillips was to Sean McVay. I’ll expand on that thought in a post to be written later. As for the Doyle hire, that one is a bold one. It might not have been my preferred choice, but I appreciate when someone steps out with a hire. This is an over-simplified look at the OC hire: If Ben Johnson is as good of a coach as the general consensus believes, then Declan Doyle will be getting a play-calling OC gig in a few years. Also: I’m not going to flip-flop and go from “give Ben Johnson whatever he wants” to complaining about his first offensive coordinator hire. That would be disingenuous. Being disingenuous is wrong and I am not about that life. On other Bears-adjacent coaching news, NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero (via Twitter/X) reports that Matt Eberflus is heading to Dallas for an interview to become the Cowboys’ next defensive coordinator. Eberflus, who coached for the Cowboys from 2011-17, entered this past weekend as the presumed favorite for the gig. And if he gets it, it’ll set up a matchup against Ben Johnson at some point in the 2026 season when the Bears and Cowboys square off. That could be fun. © David Reginek-Imagn Images In even more Bears-adjacent coaching news: Former interim head coach Thomas Brown is landing with the New England Patriots on Mike Vrabel’s staff. Good for TB. Brown ended his Bears career by doing something no coach had done since our site was launched in January 2017 — beating the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. And he did it on his first (and only try). There is still time to vote in our poll:Super Bowl LIX: Who ya got?
We love seeing a perfectly executed #PeanutPunch?? on a Sunday. pic.twitter.com/mK3ksTpjoF
— Bleacher Nation Bears (@BN_Bears) January 26, 2025 I am convinced that sharing every Peanut Punch highlight will get Charles “Peanut” Tillman one step closer to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. My other major takeaway from Sunday’s games is how much work the Bears need to do in order to build championship-caliber offensive and defensive lines. Look at how the Eagles offensive line (even with the injuries) was able to set a tone for that game. Heck, look at the defensive side of things with Jalen Carter wrecking stuff in the middle of the defense. Both KC and Buffalo had strong trench play, too. Chris Jones is a mothertrucker. You can understand why the Eberflus-led regime was insistent on finding a game-wrecking 3-technique defensive tackle. Philadelphia Eagles right guard Mekhi Becton and Kansas City Chiefs right guard Trey Smith are on the cusp of free agency. I wouldn’t mind if the Bears made either one of those players a top priority. And if they wanted to find a way to reel in both, then I’d be all for it. Some former Bears coaches will come home with a ring after Super Bowl Sunday. Will it be someone on the Chiefs? Matt Nagy (Bears HC from 2018-21 is the Chiefs OC) and Dave Toub (Bears ST Coordinator From 2004-12 and has been the Chiefs STC since 2013) already have rings. The Chiefs staff also has former Bears players Rod Wilson (Chiefs OLBs Coach played for the Bears from 2005-08 and in 2010) and Andy Heck (Chiefs OL Coach was a starting offensive tackle for Chicago from 1994-98). (Photo by Dustin Bradford/Getty Images) Hey, it could be an Eagles assistant. Vic Fangio (Bears DC from 2015-18 is in his first year as Eagles DC), Clint Hurtt (Bears assistant from 2014-16), Roy Anderson (Bears Assistant DBs Coach from 2017-18), Ronnell Williams (Bears defensive assistant from 2017-22), and Jeremiah Washburn (Bears OL Coach in 2017) could get a ring for their work in Philly.MORE BLEACHER NATION: BN Fantasy | The BN Newsletter | Cubs | Bulls | Blackhawks
HE SAID YES! The Chicago Cubs are finalizing a trade for Houston Astros reliever Ryan Pressly, who used to be a darn good closer. Pressly has closed out a World Series before, so I don’t have any doubts about the Wrigley lights being too much for him. Meanwhile, I can’t get anyone in my dynasty fantasy baseball league to answer any texts about trade possibilities. I’ll get back to that later. Tough loss for the Chicago Blackhawks against the Minnesota Wild on Sunday. Read More Details
