Thomas Brown will likely always be remembered as the Chicago Bears coach who went from passing game coordinator to interim head coach in a span of three weeks. And while his tenure with the Bears was a wild one, Brown is off to a new adventure in New England.
NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero has the scoop on Thomas Brown taking his talents to the new-look Patriots coaching staff:
The #Patriots are hiring Thomas Brown as their tight ends coach/pass game coordinator, per source. Brown, who most recently was the #Bears’ interim coach, impressed Mike Vrabel in an OC interview and now is joining Vrabel’s staff. pic.twitter.com/MCv2jM9wPQ

Ahhh, we love to see an old friend find a new home. Particularly, Thomas Brown. After being put in an unenviable situation with the Bears, Brown finished his stint as the team’s interim head coach by beating the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field in the regular-season finale. Not only did that win snap a lengthy losing streak against That Team in Wisconsin, but it also kept Matt Eberflus as the only coach in franchise history to never beat the Packers. What a dubious distinction to have.
Thomas Brown is going to the New England Patriots
To be clear, this isn’t an unexpected move. It was reported last week that Thomas Brown was among the key Bears assistants who weren’t being retained by new head coach Ben Johnson. Nevertheless, it is encouraging to see (1) news that Brown was impressive in the interview process and (2) that the former Bears interim head coach is landing on his feet. Once a Bear, always a Bear — right?
I love getting reminders that the NFL is a tangled web of weaved connections. Thomas Brown joining Mike Vrabel’s staff in New England means that the former interim head coach in Chicago (Brown) will be working with one of the first candidates (Vrabel) who interviewed for the head coach position. It ultimately went to Ben Johnson. And while I do not think many Bears fans will complain about that, I do know that Vrabel is a candidate many fans were on board with hiring.
Perhaps there is an alternate universe in which Vrabel becomes the Bears head coach and hires Brown as the full-time offensive coordinator. But we don’t live in that universe, so we can move on with our day.
