NFL makes final punishment decision on Kris Boyd after Houston Texans star threw helmet and squared up to coach

THE NFL have decided on Kris Boyd’s punishment for shoving his own coach in a furious outburst.

Boyd, 28, sparked chaos in the opening seconds of last week’s defeat for the Houston Texans at the Kansas City Chiefs.

The two sides faced off in the AFC Divisional playoffs at Arrowhead Stadium on January 18.

However, just seconds after a 63-yard kickoff return got the game underway, Boyd lost his cool.

He ripped his helmet off and threw it to the ground – seemingly in a premature celebration as the Chiefs recovered the ball – and was penalised with a 15-yard penalty added to the return.

Texans special teams coordinator Frank Ross let rip at Boyd.

But the defensive back did not take kindly to being publicly berated.

He headed over to the sidelines where he shoved Ross hard in the chest, sending the coach stumbling backwards.

Boyd continued shouting at his coach as Ross tried to calm him down.

The incident did not go unnoticed by the NFL, though.

And according to reporter Tom Pelissero, they have decided to slap him with a fine of $8,056 for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Boyd quickly apologized for his behavior in the Chiefs game and admitted he “got too excited”.

He admitted: “I did something I shouldn’t have. Learning from it. Keep my helmet on.

“I love everybody here. I love my coaches. I never disrespect anybody. I apologized to everybody.

“[Ross] told me, ‘Don’t worry about that.'”

The 23-14 defeat marked the end of the Texans’ 2024-25 season.

But despite the disappointment, head coach DeMeco Ryans refused to pile in on his star – instead insisting he did not see the “silly” antics towards Ross.

Ryans added: “What I saw is we can’t come out on the first play and throw our helmet.

“That’s not what we teach. That’s not what we’re about at all.

“It just puts the team in a negative light.

“To start the game, we give them a big return, we take our helmet off to add 15 more yards into the play, which is not smart football.”

Sadly, though, Boyd revealed he received waves of disgusting racist abuse online since the flashpoint.

The former Minnesota Vikings and Arizona Cardinals ace shared various vile messages online and insisted they were coming “every second” but he vowed to “still shine love and light”.

What happens to the fine money?

THE NFL regularly fines athletes tens of thousands of dollars every week during the season.

But where does the money go?

The NFL claims about $4 million a year has been used to support worthy causes since 2011.

According to the NFL operations website, “The fines collected are donated to the Professional Athletes Foundation to support Legends in need and the NFL Foundation to further support the health, safety and wellness of athletes across all levels, including youth football and the communities that support the game.”
