Captain Matt Turner is throwing his hat in the ring for Weld County sheriff after announcing a 2026 run for the position on Friday.

“People should feel safe; it is a basic human need,” Turner wrote in a news release announcing his candidacy. “Safety cannot be achieved or maintained by one person alone; it requires a community effort.”
If elected, he said he will:
• Focus on crimes involving drugs
• Increase efforts to arrest individuals with criminal warrants
• Increase physical and mental health resources for sheriff’s office personnel
• Adopt new technology to maintain a safe and secure jail environment
• Continue the fight to defend citizens’ Second Amendment rights.
Turner enlisted in the Army as an infantryman in January 2005 and was awarded a Purple Heart in 2007, according to the release. He served in the Colorado Army National Guard until 2012, when he joined the Weld County Sheriff’s Office.
Since joining the office, he’s spent time as an entry-level corrections officer, public information officer, detentions sergeant, patrol sergeant with the civil unit, detentions lieutenant and detentions captain before taking on his current role.
Turner, a Republican, registered his campaign with the state on Tuesday, Jan. 21, according to state records.
Turner is running to replace Reams, a Republican, who has been elected to three terms as sheriff, serving since 2014. Weld’s Home Rule Charter limits sheriffs to three full consecutive terms.
