Ukraine has hit one of Russia’s biggest oil refineries in a drone strike overnight, Russian media reports have said.
Large flames and plumes of smoke rose from the Ryazan Oil Refinery after locals reported explosions shortly before 1am on Sunday, the Russian Telegram news channel Astra said.
Ryazan Oblast Governor Pavlo Malkov confirmed Russian air defense units were defending against a drone attack in the region, which is around 500 kilometres (310 miles) from Ukraine’s border.
The reports come two days after Ukraine claimed an attack involving at least 121 drones on the same refinery on Friday, marking one of the largest single operations of its kind during the war.
Andrii Kovalenko, the counter-disinformation chief at Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, posted video to his official Telegram channel that appeared to show a fire at the refinery after drone strike on Sunday.

“It produces fuel for military equipment, aviation kerosene, diesel fuel and other types of petroleum products used in tanks, aircraft, ships and other equipment of the Russian Armed Forces.”
Witnesses reported around 10 strikes at the site.
The Astra channel said video footage of the fires circulating online was at the site, but did not confirm whether a new strike had occurred or the flames were the result of Friday’s attack.
The Ryazan refinery has the capacity to process around 17 million metric tons of oil annually, producing diesel fuel and TS-1 jet fuel, among other products, according to Ukraine’s General Staff.

After Ukraine’s strike on the Ryazan refinery on Friday, Russia claimed it had destroyed all 121 drones used in the attack, including six over the Moscow region, 20 in the Ryazan region, and a number over the border region of Bryansk.
There have been no reports of immediate casualties from the strikes.
Ukraine’s military intelligence agency also carried out a drone attack on the Ryazan Oil Refinery in May last year.
