Bruce Pearl knows that playing without star forward Johni Broome isn’t the ideal situation for his top-ranked Auburn team.

But the Tigers head coach also knows that his team has a ton of talent outside of Broome, and he’s thankful that even without Broome the past few weeks, his team has still been able to win games. Broome injured his left ankle with about 13 minutes left in a victory at South Carolina on Jan. 11. But the Tigers have persevered without their best player, pulling out that game in hostile territory before soundly beating a ranked Mississippi State team at home and escaping at Georgia, which was ranked at the time.

Now, the challenge gets even bigger on Saturday night, when Auburn (17-1, 5-0 SEC) hosts No. 6 Tennessee (17-2, 4-2) in a primetime top-10 showdown on ESPN that will tip off at 8:30 p.m. ET. During ESPN’s College GameDay on Saturday morning, Pearl said that Broome would warm up before the game and possibly make his return after being listed as questionable in Friday night’s availability report.

But the Tigers have shown the ability to win without Broome, something Pearl discussed on ESPN’s pregame show.

“We were able to win at South Carolina, at Georgia, and (against) Mississippi State at home without him and that wasn’t easy,” said Pearl. “We are a much better team with Johni Broome. We are a much better offensive team with Johni Broome because you can run everything offensively through him. … So, you have to find other ways to score.

“It’s the next-man-up mentality. Ja’Heim Hudson, who was a backup at SMU, came to Auburn knowing that he probably wasn’t going to start. We don’t beat Georgia without Ja’Heim Hudson and that’s what roster construction is all about, your eighth man, your ninth man. It’s the sum of its parts.”
