Matt Eberflus Seems to be the Presumed Favorite to Become the Next Dallas Cowboys Defensive Coordinator ...Middle East

Perhaps former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus will find a soft landing with some old friends.

Eberflus, who was fired on the Friday after the team’s Thanksgiving loss to the Detroit Lions, appears to be a popular candidate in this hiring cycle. Not as a head coach, mind you. But instead, as a possible defensive coordinator. And it sure sounds like he is the front-runner to get the gig with the new-look Dallas Cowboys:

Despite his many flaws as a head coach, I can still admit that Matt Eberflus was a decent defensive play caller. And while I would never recommend hiring him as a head coach, I know I don’t have to squint to see a future in which he is a good fit as a team’s defensive coordinator.

Matt Eberflus and the Dallas Cowboys

In addition to reporting from The Athletic’s staff of NFL and Cowboys reporters, ESPN’s Ed Werder seemed to key in on Matt Eberflus as the prime candidate to become the new defensive coordinator on Brian Schottenheimer’s Cowboys staff.

If you’re wondering why Ed Werder, a long-tenured Cowboys reporter, would walk back his original tweet, it is likely because Dallas still has to abide by the Rooney Rule requirements for coordinator hires. It is one of the reasons why I believe the Bears hadn’t made it officially official with Dennis Allen as their next DC as of this posting. That time will soon come — both for Allen, and apparently, Eberflus.

Matt Eberflus coached the Bears to a 14-32 record during his three-year stint with the Bears. His tenure in Chicago wasn’t without momentary flashes of brilliance. But they were so few and far between that I cannot bring myself to re-share them right now. The Eberflus era was full of disappointment and failure. Even with a low bar and acknowledgment that the team was executing a tear-down and rebuild that was forced upon this new regime upon its arrival following the departure of Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy, Eberflus still found ways to fail to clear the bar.

I’m not saying that I’ve lost sleep due to Matt Eberflus’ coaching, but my therapist knows way too much about his flubs as a coach than anyone should.

In the end, I leave with this: Matt Eberflus getting hired by the Dallas Cowboys would save the Chicago Bears a few bucks as the team goes about paying off what is left of his contract. It probably isn’t much, but a dollar saved is a dollar earned — and a dollar saved could be re-purposed into hiring someone on Ben Johnson’s staff.
