Staff coming together for new CSU defensive coordinator Tyson Summers despite another departure

New Colorado State defensive coordinator Tyson Summers is close to completing his staff following the announcement this week of two more position coaches, one of whom is a familiar face to the program.

However, he will have at least one more spot to fill as it was reported Friday that another member of the previous staff is leaving the program.

John Jancek returns to CSU to coach outside linebackers after serving as defensive coordinator from 2018-19 under head coach Mike Bobo. Jancek spent the 2024 season with CSU as a volunteer, assisting the offense.

Jancek has more than 30 years of experience coaching defense and 20 years of leading that side of the ball as a coordinator. He has previously coached at Central Michigan, Cincinnati, Tennessee, LSU and Georgia, where he was on the staff that won the 2021 national championship. He also won a national championship in 2002 at Grand Valley State while he was the defensive coordinator there.

“We are thrilled to have John and a coach with his background and reputation on our staff,” Summers said in a news release. “John has won multiple national championships at various levels and has been a coordinator for over 20 years, including at multiple schools in the SEC. He’ll do an elite job coaching our players and I’m excited to have his veteran experience on our staff.”

Summers has also brought in Brayden Herdic to coach safeties. Herdic spent the past six seasons at Western Kentucky, starting as a student assistant linebackers coach before becoming a defensive quality control specialist for the last three seasons.

Prior to coaching at Western Kentucky, Herdic spent the 2018 season at Southeast Missouri State as a student assistant special teams coach. He began his coaching career at Erie (Pa.) Community College in in 2017 as a student assistant.

“Coach Herdic has been in a lot of different places even though he’s a young coach,” Summers said. “Brayden has been able to work for some of the best coaches in the country and multiple coaches in the NFL. He brings an ability to connect with and teach our young players and will be a tremendous recruiter for us on the road.”

Earlier this month, Summers announced the hiring of cornerbacks coach Allen Brown. Brown comes to the Rams after spending a season with Washington State in 2024. He began his coaching career in 2014 after playing at Eastern Washington.

Brown spent the 2023 season as a quality control coach at Florida, a role he also held at Cal in 2022. He spent three seasons with Eastern Washington from 2019-21 as the cornerbacks coach/defensive pass game coordinator. In 2021, EWU finished No. 7 in the country after reaching the second round of the FCS playoffs.

His coaching career began with being a defensive intern at EWU in 2014 before moving on to Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo coaching cornerbacks from 2015-19. That was his first stint as a position coach.

“Coach Brown is a young, extremely talented and experienced coach,” Summers said. “He has strong recruiting ties on the West Coast and will bring a lot of energy and enthusiasm to the defensive room. He has a great coaching background with multiple defenses and is an elite teacher, and I’m excited to have him coach our defensive backs.”

There will likely be another position left to fill as ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported Friday that linebackers coach Adam Pilapil, who called the defensive plays for CSU in the Arizona Bowl, is expected to be named the linebackers coach at Wake Forest.

Pilapil will join former CSU defensive coordinater Freddie Banks with the Demon Deacons.

CSU’s other announced defensive assistants include Chuka Ndulue (defensive line), Adam Lopez (Merritt James Norvell Diversity Fellowship/assistant defensive line coach) and Tyson Williams (defensive graduate assistant).
