When the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max were announced in 2022, Apple developers introduced the Dynamic Island feature as a way to help users manage alerts, notifications, and live activities so that they were less of a distraction. The Dynamic Island provides interactive controls to users and reimagines the traditional notification experience. I’ve really enjoyed having this feature with my iPhone and was hoping that Apple would bring something similar to the Mac. Even though Apple hasn’t rolled out this feature, third-party app developers have. Alcove brings the Dynamic Island experience to macOS and offers a sleek, intuitive design with enhanced functionality for macOS users.

Overview

The developer behind Alcove is Henrik Ruscon. In addition to Alcove, he has developed a Mac app called Klack, which is around two years old. Alcove is virtually brand new (as of publishing this review) as it has only been available since November 2024. Ruscon started the development of Alcove around March 2024 and built the app entirely using Swift so that it was a 100% macOS native app.

Ruscon cited Apple’s iOS Dynamic Island as the main source of design inspiration for Alcove and utilized a group of beta testers to ensure the app’s stability prior to release. When asked if there were any known bugs in Alcove, Ruscon replied, “The current version of v1.2.1 is very stable.” He mentioned that having Alcove show up on the LockScreen was the most complicated piece of development as it took a tremendous amount of trial and error to figure out.

Although Ruscon prefers to keep future plans under wraps, he did say they have planned updates on the way. He is continuously improving his apps as he wanted to ensure a lifetime license meant a lifetime.

    Privacy Policy

According to the developer, no user data is collected from Alcove. There is no privacy policy posted on the app’s website.

    Pricing & Availability

Alcove is $16.99 and can be downloaded directly from the developer’s site. There is a free trial available after the app is downloaded.

    User Experience

Getting Alcove set up is easy. There are a lot of customizations that you can select to ensure you get the most personalized experience and the most out of Alcove. The first thing you’ll set up is deciding if you want Alcove to launch at login and if you want the menu bar icon hidden. From here, you can turn on/off specific notifications for Battery, Connectivity, Focus, Display, and Sound. The live activities include Now Playing and the Lock Screen. With the Lock Screen, you just select what you want to display when your computer is locked.

One of the aspects of Alcove that I was most impressed with was how integrated it is with the Apple ecosystem. When it comes to apps I enjoy a clean, easy-to-use experience. Because it was built with Swift and inspired by an iOS native app, Alcove is an app that looks and runs like it’s built into macOS. It’s a fluid experience from start to finish.

Since I enjoy a clean interface and uncluttered usage experience, adding Alcove to my system has been a blessing. Alcove is a handy utility app that creates a seamless Dynamic Island and shows you audio, brightness, controls for the Music app, Battery and so much more.

I enjoy using Alcove as it makes the time on my Mac smooth. I find myself swiping down to change a song and using my Dynamic Island more often than the standard app controls. Alcove provides an enhanced user experience for macOS. In my opinion, that is why it’s well worth it.

    Conclusion

Alcove for macOS bridges the gap Apple has yet to fill by bringing the convenience and charm of the iPhone’s Dynamic Island to your Mac. This thoughtfully designed app offers a native feel, intuitive features, and a clean, streamlined experience that integrates beautifully with the Apple ecosystem. Whether you’re managing notifications, tracking live updates, or customizing your Mac’s lock screen, Alcove transforms your desktop into an organized and engaging workspace.
