Lexi Donarski stayed hot, scoring a team-high 17 points and knocking down five of Carolina’s eight three-pointers on the night. Donarski has now made 15 combined threes in her last three games.
Three of the threes came in the first quarter, as UNC raced out to a 22-6 lead after 10 minutes. But Wake Forest clawed back, whittling the lead down to as little as two points at 30-28 late in the second quarter. After taking a 32-28 lead into the half, UNC pushed the lead back in double digits by the middle of the third quarter. The Demon Deacons wouldn’t get closer than 10 for the rest of the night, and Carolina closed on a 9-0 run to finish with a 25-point edge.
Grace Townsend contributed 13 points off the bench on 5-5 shooting, while freshman Lanie Grant added 10. As a team, Carolina shot 11-14 (78.6 percent) in the fourth quarter, 19-28 (67.9 percent) in the second half and 30-53 (56.6 percent) for the game. It was Carolina’s best shooting performance against an ACC opponent in six seasons under head coach Courtney Banghart.
The victory also gave Carolina another milestone, improving the Tar Heels to 18-3 overall and 6-2 in ACC play. The 18-3 overall record is UNC’s best through 21 games since the 2012-13 season.
The Tar Heels will be back in action when they host Florida State at Carmichael Arena on Sunday at 12 p.m.
