JERRY JONES is close to making a final decision over a new Dallas Cowboys head coach.
The billionaire owner has been in talks with a number of candidates since the end of the regular NFL season.
It comes after Mike McCarthy left the role, being forced out at the end of his contract.
The Cowboys had an awful campaign, missing out on the playoffs.
They had a final record of 7-10, coming third in the NFC East.
There were expectations of a run at the Super Bowl, but that never came to be.
Now a clear favorite is emerging for the job – which nobody saw coming.
According to reports, their own offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer is in prime position.
A deal is expected to get over the line before the weekend.
There are a number of factors why Jones sees the move as perfect for the Cowboys.
Firstly, his salary will not be high compared to other head coaches in the NFL.
Schottenheimer had no other interviews scheduled with other teams.
Jones is also general manager alongside being the owner.
That means he will maintain control and continues to be the face of the franchise.
That includes having interviews with the media after every game.
He is also someone Jones is familiar with, with the pair having a solid relationship.

Jones eight previous hires were former head coaches or familiar with the Cowboys.
Dave Campo and Jason Garret were two in the past with experience in the big job.
But they were both also promoted from being staff.
Schottenheimer is the son of longtime NFL head coach Marty.
The 51-year-old joined the Cowboys in 2022 as an analyst.
He then earned a promotion to the offensive coordinator.
That was to replace Kellen Moore, who left for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023.
He was also a candidate the Cowboys pursued.
Schottenheimer did not call plays under McCarthy, who left on 14 January.
The Cowboys have also interviewed Seattle assistant Leslie Frazier and ex-New York Jets chief Robert Saleh
