A looming lorry driver shortage threatens Government plans to ramp up housebuilding and infrastructure projects in order to drive economic growth.
The potential crisis, which is also likely to impact on home deliveries, is reminiscent of some of the problems that led to the country coming to a standstill in 2021 and saw shop shelves being empty for weeks and key industry supply chains being disrupted.

Although the problems are unlikely to be as severe as in 2021 which was exacerbated by Covid and Brexit, the Road Haulage Association (RHA) will next week issue a warning to ministers that the logistics industry faces “significant structural challenges”.
It will say that if the government wants to hit its target of building 1.5m homes – many of which are planned to be developed in a spate of new towns – the industry needs to recruit 40,000 drivers a year for the next five years.
