Two sisters embark on a holiday of a lifetime but find themselves facing very different fates after they fall out before a flight.

The Paramount + series The Castaways comes to Channel 5 this weekend starring Sheridan Smith.

Based on the novel by Lucy Clarke, it follows the fortunes of siblings who separate after a holiday row.

One is then involved in a plane crash and the other begins the hunt to find her.

Smith, who played the sister castaway Lori Holme, said the part had been a “challenge” as the role was so physical.

But she added: “It was so much fun!”

Sisters Lori and Erin embark on the holiday of a lifetime in Fiji.

But following a massive row, Erin decides not to board the island-hopping flight to their resort.

Lori does but never arrives at the destination.

Months later, neither the plane nor any survivors have been found.

However, Lori’s credit card has suddenly been used in a corner shop in a remote village in Fiji.

Erin sets out on a journey to discover what happened to her sister and whether she is still alive.

The show jumps between the two sisters’ perspectives as viewers watch Erin undertake a perilous mission to uncover the truth of the crash, while Lori struggles for survival among her fellow castaways.

As the mystery unravels, the truth about what happened to Lori and the other passengers is revealed.

But it is a truth someone on the island is prepared to kill for to keep secret.

Who is in the cast of The Castaways?

Sheridan Smith leads the cast as Lori Holme, the sister who boarded the flight to the holiday resort.

Smith rose to fame in the BBC sitcom The Royle Family, playing Emma Kavanagh and went on to star in the comedy shows Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps and Gavin & Stacey.

The 43-year-old actress and singer was awarded a Bafta for her portrayal of Charmian Biggs in the ITV drama about the Great Train Robbery Mrs Biggs.

She has also won two Olivier Awards for her parts in West End shows Legally Blonde and Flare Path.

Celine Buckens

Celine Buckens plays Erin Holme, the sister who embarks on a journey to find Lori.

The Belgian-born actress, 28, began her career playing Émilie in Steven Spielberg’s 2011 film War Horse.

She has gone on to star in starred in the Netflix drama series Free Rein as Mia MacDonald.

And more recently, she nominated for a Bafta for portraying Talitha Campbell in the 2021 BBC legal drama Showtrial.

Brendan Cowell takes on the role of Mike Brass, who piloted the plane which crashed.

Australian actor Cowell is probably best known for playing Harrag, an Ironborn sea captain, in the HBO series Game of Thrones.

But he has also played Captain Mick Scoresby in the Avatar films The Way of Water and Fire and Ash.

His novel Plum, about a retired rugby player, was released as television series in Australia last year.

Dominic Tighe

Dominic Tighe plays Daniel Eldridge, on the plane’s passengers also cast away after the crash.

The 41-year-old actor played DS Bob Cooper in the TV mini-series A Confession, starring Martin Freeman and Imelda Staunton.

He appeared as Pelham Wingfield in the period drama Hotel Portofino and starred as Julina Sandford in the 2024 Paramount+ series Insomnia

The plane crash is supposed to have happened on route to Fiji and so much of the filming did take place on the island nation in the South Pacific.

Fiji is famed for its rugged landscapes, palm-lined beaches and coral reefs with clear lagoons.

Speaking about her time in the South Pacific, Smith revealed to the Radio Times for its Christmas edition that she had to go to the make-up department three hours ahead of everyone else to have her tattoos covered up with waterproof make-up.

“‘I never regretted my tats so much – I’ll never have another one”, she said.

Some of the filming also took place in the summer of 2023 in Greece.

Myf Hopkins, the producer, told Drama Quarterly: “In Greece, we hit difficulties with the intense heat in the summer.

“We had a scene where we needed to light fires, but we couldn’t do that because fires were banned in Greece due to the heatwave.

“So we had to be clever and find our own way of doing it.

“We had to replicate something in post production.”

But it did provide the sense of space and isolation needed for The Castaways.

Hopkins said: “We found a beach in Greece where we couldn’t see anything around us.

“It felt like we were in the middle of nowhere, which is what we needed.”

When is The Castaways on TV?

The Castaways has already aired on Paramount+ and is still available to watch for subscribers but it will start on Channel 5 this weekend.

The first of five hour-long episodes airs on Sunday 26 January at 9pm, with the remaining four episodes being broadcast on the days following.
