The Hughes Fire, reported shortly before 11 a.m. Wednesday near Castaic Lake, prompted evacuation of a 280-square-mile area north of Los Angeles.

By 6 p.m. Wednesday, the fire was estimated at 9,269 acres (14½ square miles), said the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
As of Wednesday evening, Interstate 5 remained open, though the fire was approaching the freeway near Castaic.
