WENDY Williams’ niece Alex Finnie has hired a high-powered attorney to fight her guardian after the former TV host claimed she feels like she’s “in a prison.”
The U.S. Sun can exclusively reveal that Wendy‘s niece, who launched a GoFundMe to raise funds for her famous aunt last week, has hired Brett Nussbaum and Jason Atlas at New York law firm Schwartz Sladkus Reich Greenberg Atlas LLP (SSRGA) to help the star in her fight with guardian Sabrina Morrissey.
A source at the firm said they are “in the process of being retained” by Alex on behalf of Wendy.
The firm claims they have extensive experience in legal proceedings under New York’s Mental Hygiene Law Article 81, which is related to Wendy’s guardianship.
It is unclear the exact nature of what the firm will be fighting for, or if Alex is pursuing taking over as guardian of her aunt.
Alex launched the family’s GoFundMe last week as her aunt did a series of interviews for the first time since being placed in a medical facility in New York back in March 2023.
Wendy’s family created the fundraiser in the former TV host’s name on Wednesday, January 15, just before the former TV host’s explosive interviews with The Breakfast Club and Don Lemon’s YouTube show.
The GoFundMe page is titled “Support Wendy Williams’ Fight for Independence.”
Since the page’s initial launch, it has been updated with details about how the fundraiser money will be used in Wendy’s fight, and a special note from the former TV host.
The family claimed on the fundraiser’s page: “Your generous donations will directly support Wendy’s legal efforts and cover essential costs associated with her case.”
The page claimed the funds will go to attorney fees, court filing fees, expert witness fees, legal research, documentation, consultation fees and support services.
The note from Wendy, listed as an update on January 21, reads: “I have a pink Versace robe and a Victoria’s Secret black bra, and I am watching Botched, but my body is hitting and holding with my red lipstick because it’s winter. Still here in this luxury prison! Keep you all updated!”
As The U.S. Sun first reported, the GoFundMe initially stated it was launched “to assist Wendy Williams’ family in expediting her return to her rightful home in Florida.”
“For far too long, Wendy has faced the challenges of being unjustly placed under guardianship and labeled as incapacitated, despite her strong will and determination to live her life independently.”
The fundraiser, which is seeking to raise $50,000, has raised $35,000 as of this post.
‘PERMANENTLY INCAPACITATED’
The U.S. Sun first revealed that Wendy’s guardian Sabrina Morrissey‘s legal team labeled the star “permanently incapacitated” in court documents.
Wendy pushed back at that categorization in her interviews last week, asking various hosts: “Do I sound incapacitated to you?”
Wendy Williams Alcohol-Related Brain Damage, Aphasia & Frontotemporal Dementia Diagnoses
By The U.S. Sun's Senior Reporter Jessica Finn, who has reported on Wendy Williams for the past seven years.
As The U.S. Sun exclusively reported, Wendy Williams was diagnosed with alcohol-related brain damage in 2019 during a rehab stint in Florida.
An insider explained that a brain scan was done as part of Wendy’s rehab stay in Delray Beach.
A neurologist sat down with the star, her son, and her then-husband, Kevin Hunter Sr.
“The doctor explained to them that Wendy was suffering from alcohol-related brain damage.
“They told her that her alcohol abuse had done permanent damage to the layers in her brain,” the insider said.
“She was warned then and there that if she continued to drink, the damage would only get worse.”
In that meeting, they gave Wendy a devastating prognosis.
The doctors at the rehab foretold of the eventual decline of Wendy’s cognitive abilities, which have become apparent to those who have come in contact with the star in recent years.
“They told her that if she kept drinking she would continue to grow more forgetful, that she wouldn’t remember people’s names, and eventually, she could forget who people even were,” the source said.
After a comment call was sent to Wendy’s team, they released a statement saying Wendy had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia and aphasia in 2023.
“The decision to share this news was difficult and made after careful consideration, not only to advocate for understanding and compassion for Wendy, but to raise awareness about aphasia and frontotemporal dementia and support the thousands of others facing similar circumstances,” the statement read.
The guardian’s starling claims were made in her court battle with Lifetime over the controversial 2024 docuseries Where is Wendy Williams?.
In the filing, the guardian’s attorney called Wendy “an acclaimed entertainer who, tragically, has been afflicted by early-onset dementia and, as a result, has become cognitively impaired and permanently incapacitated.”
In 2022, the star officially lost her wildly popular, eponymous daytime talk show after a series of personal problems.
